I am so glad my puppy is lazy and likes to sleep in! I totally feel for you, I had a cat that use to do the same thing to me.  I think it is all about retraining them. They learn very quick what they can get away with and it seems like them whining makes you wake up so there is no motivation for them to stop because they get what they want by doing it.

We used the squirting of the water bottle to train our dog not to bark when he heard people walking up the stairs of our apartment. At first I didn’t like the idea of doing this but our trainers have used this too. Basically use a command and just squirt them once, like ” Quite” and then pretty quickly you won’t even have to squirt just picking up the water bottle and saying quite will do the trick with the hope that youll only have to say quite eventually for them to stop whining. (mostly we only use the positive reinforcement and ignoring bad behavior for training so the water bottle was the last mode of trying when the others didn’t work)
