Hi y’all! I’m having a little problem with my puppy, she used to go #2 in the back yard all the time, but now she won’t unless we take her for a walk out front! Any ideas on why this might be or tips on getting her to go back there? We do have a very tiny yard, but we clean up after her when she goes. Is there something we can put on the ground to make her more likely to use it?
Thanks so much for any advice! Pic of our girl just cause:

Maybe don’t clean it all up. They tend to favor spots that they’ve gone before. When I had this problem, I brought my friend’s dog into the yard to go, so she’d see “oh this is where I go.” It helped.

It could be the walking. You are supposed to walk a dog 20min after they eat to stimulate their bowels. So many dogs only poop on their daily walks!
I wouldn’t worry about it too much!

Have you tried walking her around the back yard (like you do in the front yard)? When she goes to the bathroom give her a little cookie (that you should have in your pocket). Trust me, a few cookies in and she is going to figure out real fast that you want her to poop in the back yard. Eventually you can stop giving her the treats (not all at once) and she should still do what you trained her to do.

@missrobots: I agree! We found that when we clean ALL of our dogs “business” that they tend to seem confused about where to go.
You might also want to try confining them to the area that you want her to go (either with a leash attached to something or with a barrier. Once she goes, you can let her out and give her a treat. This was the only way we could teach our dogs where it was ok to go in the yard.
How old is your furbaby? If she’s under a 6 months I wouldn’t worry at all, sometimes they are particular about doing their business but they can be trained and molded pretty quickly. Good luck!

@All In: I do agree that cleaning up their business does confuse them. We wait til everyone had their morning time and then clean.
One of my LO, will only do his business in the backyard now instead of on our walks. While our newest LO doesn’t care when or where. Now crazy girl has been in our household for only 2wks so we’re still working on housebreaking but she’s slowly learning. She’s trying to follow Big Brother’s lead.

@MRSLMA: You got it exactly, she’s 3.5 months! Very finicky about a lot of things, haha.
@missrobots: Maybe we will try leaving it… though our yard is SO small we thought maybe she’d think it was too messy!
@FMM: Great tip, she usually doesn’t have any trouble when we go walking, so maybe that’s the key.
@elle_71125: I need to get better about bringing treats out–usually I am in such a hurry to make sure she gets outside quickly that I forget!

My male has a hard time going potty unless he has had a little bit of excercise. If I am in a hurry and cannot walk he will run back and forth in the yard and spin circles until he can go. Even if you can’t do a long walk just playing with him or forcing him to move might encourage him to need to go.
