We went out for a friends birthady this weekend and one of her friends works for the AKC. She told me (much to my horror) how people in dogfighting rings use more docile breeds like golden retrievers and labs (which KILLS ME since I have a lab) to “train” the dogs to fight. The retreivers are such docile and non-aggressive breeds, they are “easy pickings” for the fighting dogs.
I can’t tell you how much dog fighting sickens me…but we got on the topic of HOW in the world people can think this is okay, even fun. I figured with the thousands of members and users of WB, I might see if there is anyone at all who agrees with dogfighting (or if you don’t necessary agree–you don’t 100% disagree with it).

I have had my experiences with this through animal control and veterinary settings. I, obviously, am totally against it.

I think it is heinous and disgusting, so the first option got my vote, BUT I do not think it deserves the death penalty or life in prison. A good long sentence, yes, but I think life in prison should be for rapists and murderers.

I think you need an option that includes “heinous and disgusting” but does not include life sentences or the death penalty.
Edit: SarahBabs, you beat me by 15 seconds, lol!

I voted the first one, but I don’t think it should be life in prison or the death penalty. I don’t believe in the death penalty at all and life seems a wee bit harsh considering most murders/rapists are out sooner.
That she seemed closer to the truth because I cannot “see why it’s done”
ETA- Okay I guess you both beat me to it!

each night I pray that Michael Vick will ultimately pay for what he did.
(So I guess I’m pretty clear on my stance)
I believe there is a special place in hell for those who abuse animals, children, and the elderly.

I agree with needing another category! It’s heinous and disgusting…but so is the death penalty, in my opinion. I think a long sentence would be better suited.

Another vote for heinous and disgusting, but I can’t say life imprisonment or death penalty. Perhaps…you know…not a continued football carreer, though?
I have a pit bull. Its so sad, these dogs are only try to please their owners. They have a much higher tolerance for pain than other breeds, which is why they are popular for fighting. They will fight to the death and not even realize how badly they are hurt.

@GroovyHippieChick: Karma will assure that Vick and his ilk get exactly what they deserve. It may not be on the timeline that we would prefer, but I just know that they will suffer even more than those poor animals suffered.

The only way I can begin to think about it (other than my immediate reaction of horror, disgust, and loathing for people who fight dogs or bet on dogfights) is to remind myself that violence against animals for sport has been much more common in human history than not. Bear baiting, bullfighting, cockfighting, fox hunting, etc.
There’s an article by historian Robert Darnton called “The Great Cat Massacre,” about an episode in 18th century French history in which a group of young men who worked in printing shops in Paris rounded up, tormented, and killed all the cats they could find, and how they thought this was hilarious. Darnton puts it in the context of the routine violence against animals and cats in particular that was common in this period. It’s an incredibly disturbing and upsetting piece to read, if you care about animals, but it is a useful reminder that the rejection of animal torture for sport is a very recent phenomenon.
I would also add that we currently torture animals routinely in cosmetics testing* and factory farming. I find that just as reprehensible as dog fighting, but most Americans disagree.
*I support animal testing for medical purposes, but not cosmetic ones.

No civilized human being would ever be okay with dog fighting. Personally, it disgusts me and I wish nothing but a slow painful death for those who participate in it. With that said, the justice system is so fucked as it is so these offenders will never fully pay the price for what they’ve done. If society allows rapists their freedom after only a few years, I can’t imagine anyone ever voting in the death penalty for animal abusers, even though I would FULLY support it.

Another for thinks it’s heinous and disgusting, but DOESN’T think it deserves life in prison or the death penalty.
I think that Michael Vick paid his debt to society and the fact that it is still brought up constantly confuses me. Donte Stallworth (another NFL player) was drunk when he hit and killed a man with his car, but served only 24 days in jail. I have a dog and love him like a member of my family, but to me it is just not the same as the sanctity of human life.
