howdoiknow: It’s very similar to UKIP. In fact, in both Europe and America there has been a rise in the popularity of right-wing nationalistic political parties like UKIP (Marine Le Pen and National Front in France have recently gained a lot of support too — watch that election later this week). The good news for both the US and UK is that both countries have single member districts in Congress and Parliament, so the smaller third parties like UKIP and the Tea Party (which is technically part of the Republican party, but definitely has its own agenda) are not able to win enough seats to gain a majority. But in the European Parliament, which is based on proportional representation, UKIP has done quite well; in the 2014 EU elections, UKIP got more votes than either the Labour or Conservative parties. Which is ironic since UKIP is anti-EU. Just as its ironic to have Tea Party members of Congress because they are anti-big government.

howdoiknow: He’s a clown! If he’s elected can I move in with you? :-p

MelissainNC: Thanks for this – interesting stuff. I will definitely keep an eye out for that election. As far as I remember, Ukip’s former second in command (Janice Atkinson) teamed up with Marine Le Pen – or at least was planning to – after she got booted out of Ukip.
Ukip did terrifically well in European elections – and would have done much better of course in the UK if it weren’t for FPPP.

tksjewelry: I think you’re on to something. My Darling Husband says that once you go one extreme people tend to get tired of it and swing alllll the way over to the other extreme.
Trump is gaining popularity for all the reasons you outlined. Well put.
Is it too much to ask for just a nice moderate candidate? LOL.

He HAD good ideas; however, had is the operative word.
The more he talks though, the more he demonstrates that he’s so far out of touch with reality that I can’t in good consiousness even consider him a viable candidate. He truly doesn’t understand how the world outside of business works.

howdoiknow: I agree with Jen Lawrence. If he becomes president, it will be the end of the world. He’s insane. An insane, rich playboy who has the power through his riches to run for one of the most influential roles in the world. It’s really terrifying that money and fame alone can buy you that much authority.

I’m in DC and am at CAN’T EVEN levels with Trump. I lived in the south for a few years, so I have the misfortune of knowing intelligent people who truly think Trump has good ideas. It’s starting to frighten me that he’s able to use fear and paranoia to spread hate. I used to laugh at him, but I’m starting to think that he’s actually quite destructive. OP, I would say among most people, he is not popular, certainly not among my friend group which spans the political spectrum from libertarian to moderate to progressive to socialist, though most of my friends lean left.

Having Melania as First Lady would also be interesting, to say the least. I think I would’ve preferred Ivana if that came to pass.

I’m a republican, and I think he’s a joke.

Boxerlover24: There are moderate candidates, but they don’t get much support despite the fact that so many people claim to want a moderate candidate. John Kasich is extremely moderate, and yet he has almost no support. In 2012 Jon Huntsman was also a very moderate candidate, and you see how well he did. The fact is that political elites – both politicians and activists – are more polarized than the electorate. Activists are more likely to vote in primary elections, more likely to give money to political campaigns, and more likely to volunteer for campaigns. And so to get their support, most candidates move toward the extremes during campaigns.

NFLwidow: Totally surreal…

mishinthecity: The politics of fear is really depressing – totally agree with you that he capitalises on that. Again, it’s interesting to hear about someone who used to laugh at the guy, but now sees him as quite frightening.

He is the literal worst. That’s really all I can say.
