- Wedding: December 1969
I got married a few weeks ago, and after some soul-searching have decided not to keep my wedding dress. I was planning on donating it to a charity until I realized most of the charities I’ve come across want the dress to be professionally cleaned and repaired before it is sent in. My gown was lace/chiffon and the outer layer has a 9″ tear on back of the train near where the button was to bustle it (got stepped on when dancing!), and the underside of the train is muddy in places from outdoor pictures. I’ve seen quotes in my corner of the world for a couple hundred dollars for cleaning, and can’t even guess the cost of repairing the train if at all possible.
At the risk of sounding selfish, I just can’t handle the idea of paying hundreds of dollars for cleaning/repairs before giving away a $1100 dress. Nor can I justify throwing it away, because it is a beautiful dress, and the tear and dirty hem really aren’t visible in any of the pictures anyways. I have to believe that someone somewhere can use this dress. Any ideas on where/how to give away a dress without fronting the money for cleaning or repair?
