808- Oh can I relate!  Ours came back abnormal (there is no false positive or false negative on this screen, only risk ratios).  We had a 1:24 chance of Down Syndrome and got bumped out of the normal protocol… The way I found out was that I received a voicemail saying that I needed to call in and talk to the genetic counselor.  I already knew what that meant, so I freaked out for the time that it took to get a hold of her (overnight), and then continued to freak out until we got further testing and results (took a week).

We got CVS and found that the baby’s chromosomes were normal, which made the rest of the pregnancy much more peaceful than it otherwise would have been.

I wouldn’t read too much into the perinatologist doing your 18 week US.  Mine was done by a radiologist.  It just depends on what your particular practice does.

Hope this helps!

Are you just worried because you’re getting the run-around? I just got my third genetic screening results today and all 3 times they would not let me get the results from a nurse, I had to wait for a specialist to call me back. And all 3 times everything looked absolutely fine. I think it’s just protocol or something for you to have to speak to a specific person about the results.

That’s pretty low risk 808!  My starting point was 1:76 (just shows you how old I am!) and it went to 1:24.  Even then, it was only a 4% risk, but I was on pins and needles and just needed to know… so we went straight to chromosome testing at the first available appointment.

It really sounds like you don’t need to do that with such a low risk!

haha, good luck 808bride!

While we were waiting for our results I was watching a reality show (Idol?) where one of the people on it had a few siblings with down (Some adopted).  When she talked about the love she had for them and the joy they brought to her life, I realized that although I certainly did not want a baby with Down’s that I could deal with it if I needed to.  For some reason that helped give me some peace while I was waiting…..

I can relate. I didn’t do any genetic testing but they did find a soft marker for ds when we went in for our 20 week ultrasound. I was too chicken to do the amnio and decided to wait it out and see if it was still there at 32 weeks. It wasn’t and our little boy is perfectly fine. It was really hard and I stressed about it until the day he was born, but I knew I would love and accept him no matter how he turned out.
