In my state, only your maiden name goes on there. So basically, it is your information, then underneath is your husband’s info, and underneath that and to the side is the officiant info with the date. Only the officiant signs

Oops, hit submit too fast

I would think that it has no legal standing until you go to change your name. I know its just basically a document that allows you to change your name

The names on your marriage certificate have no legal standing until you go to the social security office and have them change it.  When you go, they will copy what’s on your marriage certificate and then it will be legal.

I have that.   I was Ms. Smith.  Now I am Mrs. Smith Jones.    I love having both.   Socially, I go by Mrs. Jones, but on all my documents, I have two last names.  It was the perfect compromise.

Just to warn the OP, most states don’t allow double non hyphenated last names. You should definitely check the laws and restriction in your state.

Also consider, that some states make it extremely difficult to change your last name if you do it “after” you are married. If you know you want to have children and will be changing your last name, I would recommend doing it once you are married not a few years after marriage once you have kids.

Once again, the level of red tapes really does differ state to state so just check the rules in your area.

It’s definitely allowed here in New Brunswick.   It seems more popular than the hyphen.  I’m hoping it’s an option for the OP since it was recommended to her.
