honeybadger9693:  I’m much like you with my pets – in the past, I would skip some trips because I just couldn’t leave my dogs (one was very old and had health issues, understandably). I don’t have family/friends to care for them when I’m gone, so I have to board them – which stresses me out. However, you have a great situation – the animals will all be in their own home, and your parents will be looking after them. Win/win! Go on your trip and have a great time! By The Way, I’ve had to learn to just bite the bullet and board my dogs. I board them with their vet, which helps my anxiety as I know they are in good hands should something happen. 🙂

I can assure you that whether your cruise will negatively impact the emotional well being of your pet is NOT a third world problem. Starvation, access to fresh water, basic medical care – those are third world problems. Maybe instead of going on a cruise you should read a newspaper before talking about your own third world problem.

They’ll survive! Just go on your amazing cruise and leave them some treats while you’re gone.

Okay, here is my suggestion: Create a happy picture in your mind of your pets cuddled up on your sofa with your parents, being petted, tails wagging. Make it as strong an image as you can with details like their favorite blankets, toys, etc. Then every time you start to worry about being away from them, STOP and remember that image. Don’t let your mind fret about what-ifs, but immediately force it to picture your pets happy and loved with the people who will be caring for them. No dwelling. If you can come up with a positive mantra to repeat too, even better. “They’re going to be safe and loved while we’re gone.” or something similar maybe?

ilovesophia:  I’m sure that the OP meant “first world problem” because she recognizes that on some level her worry is about how fortunate she is that she can afford a nice holiday and that she has trustworthy people to look after her pets while she’s gone.

honeybadger9693:  I agree with all the previous posts! Go! Your pets will be well looked after and will enjoy some spoiling from their “grandparents”.

Also – I’ve been on several cruises, and they have been the most restful vacations of all. There’s always plenty to do, but sleeping is one of my favorite parts of a cruise. The gentle rocking of the boat is like a cradle… which equals an amazing night’s sleep!

Go!!!! Your animals will be totally fine!  You’ll probably worry about them for the first half day and then you will get into your cruise and be fine.  I understand, I have pets too, but they are fine without you.  Just make sure your parents have the phone number to your vet so you have extra peace of mind

Don’t worry about leaving right after you get off work and starting work the next day you get back, most people do that all the time!

You won’t get land sick.  I go on liveaboards – like a cruise but small ship for scuba diving and they’ve always been in super rough waters and you feel a little wobbly when you first step off the boat, but that’s it.  I doubt you will even feel much from a cruise, those ships are designed to make things pleasant!

Enjoy!

honeybadger9693:  they will be fine!!!! My husband and I were like this when we went on our cruise and our dog was also with his parents and she was fine. She is VERY attached to us ever since we rescued her and we had a lot of sad moments while we were away. His parents emailed us every day with pictures and to tell us how happy she was. She was actually better on the long trip than when we would leave for just a few days because she had time to get settled in and not be anxious. I am sure after the first 2 days your dogs will get used to it and be fine! Don’t cancel your trip!

I dread every vacation because of our animals! The first day I always cry. But once you’re gone you have no choice but to trust that the babies will be okay! It is a lot easier for me when I have someone taking care of them at my house, because I worry less about them being afraid or uncomfortable. I always leave a file folder with my dogs’ and cats’ veterinary info on the kitchen  table. If the pets need a vet visit, the sitter just takes the whole folder to the vet and it has everything they need to know. I have a credit card on file at our vet so it makes things easy. Your animals will be fine! Enjoy yourself!!

You sound like me lol.  I think something is a great idea until it gets closer and I start freaking out about everything.  DH and I dont go on vacations where we cant bring the dogs, mostly because we have no one to watch them and because I miss them too much.  But hey you only live once…so go!!!!  And have a great time!!!

Perhaps get your parents to email or text a photo of your babies everyday?  This really helped when DH and I left our cat for the first time 🙂 Now that we’ve done it a few times, we’re a lot more relaxed as long as we know she’s in good hands. It gets easier!

Go!

(But next time make sure you have at least 2 days off pre and post cruise- you are going to HATE going back to work the next day.)

GO GO GO. I know exactly the  feeling re the dogs.   I just lost my dear older dog , for whom h. and I have never been able to go  away together for like 5 years, so go now , while your older animals  are still fine. Even your ‘shadow’ one will  be OK

And stop  worrying about being sick/tired all that , dont plan to have problems! It will be lovely  !!

PS I think you mean  First World problems ……
