I hear you on Mexico… but the Mayan Riviera and the Playa del Carmen area is still considered relatively safe (lots of Canadians winter there)… you’ll also find the Ruins of Tulum nearby.

Another idea that comes to mind is Puerto Rico… which is a lot more than just historic Old San Juan (which is where you’ll find landmarks for the Old Spanish City from the 1500s… 4 Forts etc)

In Ponce is the Tibes Centre, a great archeological find from the Pre-Columbian era.

As well Puerto Rico has a Tropical Rain Forest… with lots of opportunity for exploration and adventures !!

For yourself…

PR has great beaches, nightlife in San Juan, and as it is an American Protectorate, you’ll find that things are different but familiar… Restaurants, Shopping, etc.

It might just be a Destination that “checks the boxes” for both of you

Puerto Rico Tourism = http://www.seepuertorico.com/

Hope this helps,

@msradha_03:  Both Greece and Italy are incredible. You would have a super romantic, adventurous, amazing time in either country, trust me. But if you’re leaning towards Greece…do it!

I am a history buff (double majored in history and classical civilizations) and I would second Greece!  Lots of ruins AND gorgeous beaches!

@msradha_03:  I’ve spent a month in Italy, and trust me, there’s a reaon why everyone goes there – it’s absolutely incredible. Let me know if you need any help planning your itinerary, I’ve been all over! In Greece, if you have limited time but beaches are a high priority, you might want to go to one of the smaller, less touristy islands. Santorini is really, really beautiful but more crowded – and it’s a long journey to get there. There are islands that are closer to the mainland with beautiful beaches and their own history – for example, I went to Aegina and rented a vespa, rode all around the island (totally gorge), saw ancient ruins, laid on the beach…and there weren’t too many tourists. Just an idea! It’s only an hour or two ferry ride from Athens.

Also, the beaches in Italy are great – my fave is Cinque Terre, but I’ve heard the Amalfi Coast has some stunning beaches as well.

Check out the Azores islands off the coast Portugal.  That’s where we’re honeymooning and it has a good mix of the 2 interests.  We’re booked through Archipelago Choice Ltd. and they have been incredibly helpful.

Greece was my immediate thought when I read your post!  Santorini is busy, but it is possible to find secluded hotels and it is seriously one of the most romantic places I ever been (that sunset!) so it’s absolutely perfect for a honeymoon.  However, because it is volcanic, the beaches we went to there were black sand (I’m not sure whether there are also white sand beaches in other parts of the island).

Mykonos is a bit of a party island, but it does have great beaches.  You would have a lovely time on either!
