I have some questions about altering a dress for those of you who’ve gone through this or otherwise have a good understanding of what can/cant be done to a dress.
I have the DB satin fit n flare dress w pickups (I’d post a pic but I think they finally stopped carrying these and I can’t find it on their site). It’s always seemed a bit odd to me, and I’ve finally determined that the waist isn’t in the right spot, it’s way too high. I’m only 5’4″ so I initially thought it really unlikely that my torso is too long for the dress, but the distance between the top of the bust and my waist is just not long enough – if I put the waist where it needs to be, I’m not fully covered on top. The waist hits me across my ribcage, and then flares out at my natural waist, which feels funny, makes me look a bit wider through the middle than I am and causes the dress to slip downward.
Do you think it is possible to “move” the waist lower, ie pinch the dress in more at the sides below where the waist currently sits? I’m not sure how much shape changing is possible w alterations. If it matters, the hip area could probably come in 2-3″ and maybe 3-4″ around the bum so there’s room for a lot of tapering – it’s very pear shaped; basically all flare and no fit.
Or, would it be easier to add a corset back so everything was more adjustable and tighter (presumably just removing material from the back of the dress rather than undoing and redoing the sides) , or would the waist shape/placement need to be changed regardless and the corset back might be a separate issue?
I know nothing about alterations so I’ll also add that I only paid $299 for the dress so considering other dresses would also be an option if this seems unlikely to work out.
Thanks for any advice or ideas!
