you could call stores and ask when they are having sample sales-or try to get on their e-mail lists.  also you can go to stores and try on gowns and see if they have them on sites like preownedweddingdress.com.  what type of dress are you looking at?

Definately contact the local stores and see when they’re having sample sale or trunk shows 🙂 Also find out about when dresses start being marked down because they’re no longer being made or they’re phasing them out of their store.

I bought my dress on eBay for $76. It was a sample.

I just bought my dress 2 weeks ago and every store I went to had a 20% off sale on dress orders and discounts on veils and accessories. I was told at one store it was beacuse of the time of year where they put everything on sale becasue new styles are going to be coming out soon. One store had just had a sample sale, and another one started their sample sale a week later. Seems like it is or was a good time to buy. Not sure if the info I was given was true or not on the reasoning though.

Definitely look for a sample sale. Many stores charge a flat rate for alterations, so even if you have to alter a dress bought off the rack a lot (as I did), the alteration fee is the same as if you’d ordered the dress in your size. I saved over 40% buying this way. I’ve heard of sample sales in late spring and late fall, but call around to check. GOod luck!

I bought my dress used. And it looks great and it was in great shape, so if you don’t really care if someone wore it before you did, then it can be a more economical option. My friend had great success at a vintage store, too.

Also–BCBG, Ann Taylor, White House Black Market, and Limited have all started offering inexpensive wedding dresses (although their selection is pretty small), fyi. You can find them online.

running of the brides–it’s totally worth the hassle.  I got a 1300 dress for $273 with tax.
