I think that I want my bridesmaids to wear knee-length dresses, but I was wondering if that would be okay for an evening wedding. Our ceremony starts at 5 or 5:30 and it is inside. As for the formality of the rest of the wedding attire, I want my dress to have a train, but the guys will only be wearing suits and not tuxes. I was planning on ordering the bridesmaid dresses today, but then someone mentioned that usually evening weddings were more formal and therefore typically had bridesmaids in longer dresses. So, I was just wondering if anyone in the hive had an opinion on this. Thanks!

have them wear updos and nice jewelry (like simple pearls) to make the dresses more formal. i think knee-length is fine. i don’t know what part of maryland you’re in, but near dc it tends to be pretty hot in september anyway so your girls would probably like shorter dresses!

I’m a fan of short dresses in general. I think unless you’re planning a very formal affair, the short dresses will be fine.

We can’t get into our venue until 5pm so our wedding isn’t starting until 7ish… and I’m DEFINITELY having short bridesmaid dresses (though they haven’t been picked out yet, I imagine them as dressy matching cocktail dresses). Our venue isn’t super formal though- it’s an art studio/gallery space so long dresses would look silly.

Thanks for all of the feedback. That helps. I just needed a little reassurance before I ordered them.
@kitzy: I like your idea of updos and simple jewelry. I’ll have to keep that in mind.

i love short dresses regardless, they are so much easier. I am having an outdoor wedding and i want a nice flowy summer dress for mine, nothing too fancy.

I think short dresses for evening weddings are still fine. They are still formal. And I’ve seen the reverse where people have long dresses at outdoor summer weddings. Go for whatever your preference is. And your girls would likely prefer a short dress too because they will be more likely to wear it again.

Absolutely! My wedding is at 6:30 and pretty formal and we are having short strapless dresses in a darker color. I think the color is really the key thing in this situation. You dont want a baby blue dress past 5pm. I would go with dark, rich colors for the evening. Your Bridesmaids are much more likely to be abel to wear their dresses again if they are short.
PS–in my book short dresses must have matching shoes–something to consider when choosing.

Short dresses are fine unless it is very formal. If all the guests wear long dresses it would be weird… but if they wear mixed length dresses you will me fine!
