I’m getting married in September and bought a sweet little ivory silkcocktail dress that seems perfectly appropriate for our wedding and venue. (private chapel ceremony, afternoon lunch and cocktail reception in a very posh NYC hotel)
I read about the Sample Room recently and thought it couldn’t hurt to take a peek around. I figured that most dresses wouldn’t suit me (I’m a ‘mature’ bride and have no desire to be bustled, corseted or cupcaked in any fashion). But what could it hurt just to look?
As i predicted, most of their dresses were way over the top. I tried on a few sheath silhouettes that were nice enough, but nothing that made my heart go pittypat.
And then I walked over to the Jenny Packham rack.
Against my better judgement I tried on a JP Aurora dress from 2008. It fit like a dream and my heart went pittypat. Major pittypat.
In my heart of hearts, I know this dress is really a bit too flashy for an afternoon reception, and the price (2,500) didn’t seem like a major bargain for a 5 year old sample. So I walked away. But it’s haunting me.
I blame all you bees and your beautiful dresses, by the way. Talk me down, won’t you please?

@lilcafe: That’s a beautiful dress! I don’t think I’ll be much help though, I figure my wedding is going to be as close as I get to a red carpet and i’m spending roughly 2,500 on the dress and having a brunch reception.

@lilcafe: Post a pic of your dress that you already bought. I bet it looks even more lovely on you.

@allisonh: Haven’t had the nerve to post a selfie quite yet’ but this is my serviceable little Kate Spade…

*cough* I hate to play the other side here, but if it is a posh hotel..I think it’d be lovely. And it’s your wedding day, why not look fabulous? And I’m not sure of the regular price of that particular JP, but I think that’s a great deal considering it is a JP and her dresses are so extravagantly priced. If you could afford it..I say throw caution to the wind..you could always resale it..

Go back and get that dress.
I’m in your situation right now and I’m kicking myself every. damn. day.

Girl! If you have the money and you won’t miss it too terribly much, buy the JP! Your KS is lovely, but sooo different from the JP. Go for it!

i can’t believe you’re even conisdering paying so much for a dress! (did that help? 😉
But no honestly, I think the JP is pretty but not $2500 pretty and also i don’t think it’s very chapel-y.
Just like on scantron tests, go with your first instinct! you bought your dress for a reason! we get ourselves into trouble by “just looking.” Stop looking and remember what you love about the dress you own and what drew you to it in the first place. mmkay?
Make wise choices! LOL
good luck either way!

lol. I’ll sleep on it, and if it still haunts me (and that fiend that was eyeing it up on me didn’t snag it immediately after I left)…
Well mebbe. You’re all evil. 🙂

@MxH13: I REALLY needed to hear this point of view.
my first car didn’t cost much more than this, and it lasted past college.

I’ll help: don’t do it!
It’s a lovely dress and not too flashy for afternoon, but you could get a custom dress that’s similar, or a replica, for much less. Or even buy an existing plain dress with a similar shape (not too hard to find IMO) and add custom embroidery similar to the JP dress.
I’m with you on the car thing. I couldn’t justify spending that much on a dress, let alone a one time use dress, either.

I can understand why you would want to splurge, it is a lovely dress.
Your Kate Spade dress is so so beautiful! I bet it looks great on you too 🙂 It looks perfect for an afternoon reception!
What it comes down to is 1) Can you afford it easily? 2) Which would be greater- your regret over not getting the dress or your regret over spending $2500?

the JP looks like an evening dress…not very wedding-y nor something I would want to wear for your type of wedding less yet to pay $2500 for
second, I love that Kate Spade dress!!

Imagine your lovely KS with $2,500.00 in CASH sitting on top of it. That is $2,500.00 of Your, after-tax, after-rent dollars. What would you give yourself permission buy yourself with that $2,500.00? Diamond studs? Hawaii for two weeks? or honestly the JP gown?

That looks just like the dress Gwen Stefani wore to the MTV VMA’s in the ’90s!!!!
Did that help?
