I am sick to death of trying to find my perfect dress… because I think I have it figured out every few days or so then I change my mind again!
The only thing I DID know right from the start was that I wouldn’t wear white, ivory, or any of that. Looks horrid on me. So I narrowed it down to blue.
My first impulse was to go with something vintage, since I ADORE vintage, or at least vintage reproduction or vintage inspired… since I figured I wouldn’t be able to find authentic vintage to fit me (I’m a regular size 12/14).
Well then I couldn’t pin myself down on an era and went back and forth from 1850 through 1960.
Finally I decided that the 50’s “New Look” styles flatter me best with nipped waists and huge skirts, so I decided to go that route. I fell in love with a vintage dress online that is way too tiny but have spoken to 2 different dressmakers (one online and one here in town) who say they can make it for me, for about $150 (labor only). So, I got all excited and started looking for patterns and fabrics…
Somewhere along the line, though, I remembered how I love a ballgown, a pick-up skirt, corset bodices, etc., and I got off track drooling over some actual wedding dresses that could be made in blue and had those attributes. Then my dreams were shot down when I realized all of those were from china websites with scary reviews… and the “real deal” dresses like the ones they are advertising are way out of my budget (my budget is a paltry, mom-and-fulltime-student $300 for a dress). Like this, the Maggie Sottero “Estella”;
So I’m back to my original idea to just get a vintage inspired dress made.
The inspiration is this:
But lately I am wanting something a bit more formal. This is my second marriage, but my first “wedding” and I don’t plan to do it ever again. How can I go with this idea and “fancy it up”?
I am wondering about just having it made in a ballet length? Or even full length?
I want to wear a birdcage veil so that factors. I don’t know if I want cap sleeves, or short, or 3/4. I might change some details, as I really like buttons down the back.. I really want some kind of sleeve. I’ve got arm tattoos and wonder if I should cover them… not because I think there is anything wrong with showing them but in my case, one is a half-finished half sleeve and without color so I wonder if I should cover it for that reason (since I don’t forsee having the money to cover it anytime soon, we are paying for all of this ourselves)..
I also am all twisted up over fabric. I love the jacquard but don’t want something shiny. Our wedding will be technically a winter wedding (end of March in Iowa) so I thought about a pale blue velvet. Then I see vintage allover lace dresses and love those too… though that would make it cost more right? I hate polyester, so the price goes up right there. I’m also afraid that whatever dress pattern I pick won’t turn out in reality to look like I expect.
I also wonder how soon to get started on the whole thing since I have lost some weight recently. The wedding is 9 months away, there is a good chance I will lose more weight (I plan on trying), so when should I actually get the dressmaking started?
I know this is long and convoluted.. but has anyone else had such trouble just deciding on a dress? I feel like it’s a mixed blessing, once I realized I could have a dress made affordably, there were suddenly TOO many choices available! I started wanting to change the back, the neckline, the length, blah blah blah, whereas before, I would have bought this dress instantly had it come in my size!
