It’s official, I’ve ordered my wedding dress! And I found it at the last place I ever expected to have success — Kleinfeld!
Yes, Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City.
I’m from New York so I went home to try on dresses with my mother around and we went to various shops during my visit. She had talked to one shoppe about what I was going for and indicated that I required my dress to have a corset back so she suggested I look into Maggie Sottero…so I did. I found a dress online on her website that I thought fit the bill of what I was going for pretty well and guess who had the dress? Kleinfeld. So I had to make an appointment. And boy oh boy was I not excited for it since they came off as super snooty, requiring your credit card number to charge a $50 deposit in case you canceled in less than 48 hrs or just didn’t show. But my oh my were they fabulous! I am not a very girly person and I definitely do not conform to the norm but they treated us so well, definitely were listening to what I was going for and even after I tried on the dress and loved it, the consultant helped me complete the look by doing my hair and placing a sash to add a touch of color and detail to my waist. I cannot say enough good things about them!
Oh! And while I was standing there in that big main room with my dress on I noticed that people were starring – including Kleinfeld’s photographer and 3 ladies behind my mirror were starring at me and sure enough out from behind them comes Mara, the owner to introduce herself and tell me how that dress was absolutely stunning on me and I had the perfect body for it. Kleinfeld’s own photographer also came up to me and asked for permission to take photographs of me posing in the gown! He got my email address, so hopefully he will email them to me as photography is not allowed in Kleinfeld.
So…the dress — it is a Maggie Sottero Monet. I am going to have it made 3 inches short and then for alterations we are going to remove all the crinolin that makes it poof and probably shorten the train (since it was so long that it took my shoe with me when I walked out of the dressing room!). I wanted a dress that was fitted to the waist/hips, sweetheart neck, corset back and “fun” bottom to fit our personalities and the Caribbean style wedding that we’re having. Also since we are doing a trash the dress session and I want to feel very relaxed and playful in my dress. Will be adding a sash with some blingy detail in the middle to the waist. And that’s about all I know so far!
Here it is:
The biggest surprise was the price – $1300 – far short of the $2000 minimum that Kleinfeld advertises their gowns starting at. And if you are not from in state and want the dress shipped to you it’s a $75 shipping charge but you don’t get charged any tax. That’s all FYI. But Despite coming in with a low budget, I was pleasantly surprised at how willing my consultant was willing to work with me and never seemed to judge me for it – she was very conscious about making sure that dresses she showed me fit my budget.
