I hesitated to write this for a few days, because I know I don’t want to hear that I shouldn’t have bought the dress I bought. 🙁
I found my *almost* perfect dress, and even found one used for a great price ($1,600 original price, $800 used) on this board from someone in a city just an hour away from me (so I would get to see it and try it on before I buy). I just wanted to add a sweetheart neckline and a dip in the back of the bodice, and it would have needed a hem. My mom came into town this past weekend and I showed her all of the pictures, and she started expressing concerns that the alterations would be very expensive because of the lace and the scalloped lace hem. Also, the crystal sash I wanted would have obviously been at least $120 (even from etsy), and the mermaid slip around $75. So, the $800 dress was looking more like at least $1,200-$1,300. And, my mom was concerned that the lace would not hold up after being worn as it seemed like very delicate lace that could damage easily.
So, I told her about one alternative dress that I found that was pretty similar. We went to look at it, and she loved it more than the other one. This dress has less delicate lace, some spread out beading, a sweetheart neckline, and a dip in the back of the bodice. It is more of an A-line shape, but the seamstress told me she can easily modify it to be a trumpet. It was a sample and only $500! They quoted us an alterations price of $250 to take the bodice in a couple inches, add bra cups, and modify to a trumpet skirt. I might still want a sash, but probably not one as substantial as what I was planning for the original dress, so it would probably be less expensive (maybe just a satin sash). And I may or may not need a slip, depending on how the trumpet skirt comes out. She/we decided to buy it (my mom had already graciously offered to buy my dress for me).
I have been trying to get on board ever since!
Bees, what do you think? Do you think I did the right thing in saving money and buying the second dress? I’m having such a hard time picturing it since it currently isn’t the shape I want. I know I could still buy the used dress and try to sell the one I bought… but I really don’t want to spend $1,200 – $1,300 (I have some issues with how expensive the whole wedding industry is), and I don’t know if the dress would sell anyway because it’s a style from a couple years ago.
Thanks for listening!
