When I saw this BHLDN Monarch dress online I fell in love with it. It was one of the first wedding dresses I saw that I liked- the butterflies! When I found a seller on ebay who was selling hers in my size for an amazing price, I snapped it up before we had really decided anything else for our wedding. My wedding is in June, in my parent’s backyard (picture a larger suburban yard with a large deck coming off the back, mostly lawn with a few large trees. Woods that block the neighbors or atleast hopefully will for summer XD ).
Now I’m worried that the dress is too formal for a backyard wedding? The top pleats are what I’m struggling with, and honestly I don’t like them as much as I thought I would. They’re too shiny?
Now I’m worried that the dress is too formal. Pics are from a few months ago (please ignore the messy hallway, I literally tried this dress on the moment it arrived!) The top pleats are what I’m struggling with, and honestly I don’t like them as much as I thought I would. They’re too shiny and the top is to heavy looking?
It’s currently at my parents house so I can’t get alterations done until I’m home around May 1st. I would need to get the straps and bust taken in, and about 6″ chopped off the bottom. I’m not sure if altering the top is a possiblity. Wth my height (<5″) it’s doubtful I can resell this dress so it’s probably worth trying to make due. Maybe add a sheer layer to the top? Thin the straps? Is there a way to alter this?
However, I’m considering buying another dress all together. Something more light and airy <500. I’ll follow up this post with pictures of alternatives I’ve found.

It looks perfect for a backyard wedding- the butterflies perfect it

Fleur- Found secondhand two sizes larger than mine, but I love the top. I wish the skirt was more A-line and the back view is eh.
Leanne Marshall- a few around 500. Love the top. Do I like the all lace skirt? Is this TOO casual? Since I’m <5” will I look TOO sweet and cute?
J.crew sadie secondhand 300. I’m slightly shoulder-top heavy so I would probably slim the top. Love the dots. Would need a hem at the very least..
Inesse- 290 at Bhldn and Nordstrom. I love the skirt and how light it looks, but I’d probably have to slim the top. The draped top over a belt isn’t flattering on me.
Watters penelope ~600 secondhand. Over budget. When I tried on wedding dresses in store I LOVED the penelope dress, but not the bronze underlay. This one seems to be white, in my size. Would need a hem at least. I’m not sure if the illusion will irritate my sensitive skin or not.
Onyx- around 500 secondhand in my size. I’m worried the altered bust will be too small. I LOVE this dress as well- the back is stunning. Would, like always, atleast need a hem.
I’m really struggling with this decision. Not only do I hate the idea of spending more money on MY appearance that could go towards other things for our guests, I worry that buying another dress will also be a mistake.

That is the coolest dress ever! It DOES match your venue and even if it didn’t, who the heck cares? It’s amazing!

thanks! You responsed so fast! I love the butterflies, was totally obsessed as a kid.
it’s less a garden wedding, more of a backyard lobsterbake. Does that change your opinion?
aww thanks, the butterflies are my favorite part as well! Maybe I should have added a poll.

I get what you mean, OP, about the dress being a bit formal for a backyard wedding, but I think the butterflies are so perfect for a backyard wedding that it kind of balances out.
