Hello bees, I’m feeling discouragedright now. I have two dresses, but none of them feels like “the one.” Dress shopping is a nightmare for me because I’m petite so the lengths of the gowns are too long and the hip/butt area hits me in the wrong spot. On top of that, I needed a RED wedding gown. I couldn’t find anything in stores so I consulted a designer and had him make a custom gown. Because he’s a professional, I only sketch the general silhouette of the dress and left all of the detailing up to him.
Dress #1, 1st fitting:
It is long which is odd because he measured me himself. I don’t like how he uses such large lace pattern and Swarovski crystals. What is up with the one sleeve off the shoulders? He tells me that it’s fashionable but I absolutely hate it and he’s REALLLLLY pushing to keep it. He’s the type of designer that would rather NOT make a dress than compromise. I asked him to remove some things and add others and we’re waiting on the final result as we speak. Because the dress looks nothing like my sketch, I’m not sure I would like the final result.
Dress #2, 1st fitting:
My fiance and I went to Neiman Marcus last weekend to look at a bag. They had a beauty event with a live DJ so it was overly noisy and crowded. We went upstairs to take a breather and just as we got off the elevators, I saw a red gown in a size 0 hanging off the wall. My fiancé asked me to try it on for curiosity sake and IT FITS!!! He ordered the gown without a second thought because he thinks it’s “meant to be” and likes how it hugs my body. It will arrive in a week. Our theme is spring cherry blossom so I tried to convince myself that the pick ups looks like a flower, it’ll match, but deep down I personally hate how dated it make the dress look. What should I do? Will a seamstress be able to remove the pick ups? How much do you think it’ll cost to have a new skirt made?

Ooh I’m sorry but I actually love both of those dresses but they are two totally different looks….
I voted to wait for the 1st dress and if that one is okay to return the 2nd dress. It’s easier to return the 2nd dress bc it’s from Neiman. I dont think the 2nd dress looks dated even with the pick-ups and I normally DESPISE pick-ups.

@eosin: i am NOT a fan of pick ups but omg that dress looks AMAZING on you! It doesnt look dated at all.

I think the second dress is gorgeous, but I’m with you on the pick-ups. Maybe consult with a seamstress and see if it can be softened a bit?

When I think of “pick ups” on a dress, I think of pirates, quinceanera, sweet 16, flower girls, phantom of the opera, etc. I feel like I need a rose in my mouth as I’m gliding across the dance floor to some spanish love song. It’s just odd. And in this day and age, who the heck wears pick ups? I feel like I’m going back to the 1990s instead of being fashion forward. On the other hand, it looks borderline OK on me. This feeling of mild distain is what I hate. I just want to love a dress and be done with dress shopping already.

- Wedding: May 2013 - Pavilion overlooking golf course scenery, reception at banquet hall
I usually hate pickups because they look (literally) tacked on, but whoever designed that dress knew exactly what they were doing and what pickups SHOULD look like! It looks fab IMO. I like both dresses and I don’t think either is a wrong decision. I’d wait until dress 1 is finished to make a final decision tho.

@eosin: Personally I do not like your first dress at all. I think it’s hard to have a red wedding dress in the first place, but as long as it’s bridal it’ll be fine. But it doesn’t look bridal, it looks like a weird prom dress. However I LOVE your second dress! I think it’s beautiful and fits you perfectly. Can you imagein yourself with your hair done and holding a boquet, does it make you like the dress better?

I absolutely adore your second dress. The color is wonderful. And I don’t think of those as traditionanl pickups, those are more like very gently tucked folds.

I think both are beautiful, but I really do love the second one. I also do not normally like pick ups, but I LOVE that! You look gorgeous and that shade of red is stunning on you!

I think the first dress is gorgeous! I like the one shoulder.
I do like the top 2/3 of the 2nd dress; it looks great on you, but agree that the pick ups should be removed. Just make it like a normal mermaid bottom.

Please please pick the 2nd dress. I hate pickups, but they are gorgeous on this dress!! You gotta ask yourself, would u love the first dress if u didn’t custom make it and it was hanging on a rack at the store???

I’m not usually a fan of one-shoulder dresses but good golly that first dress is so gorgeous, especially from the back!!! I like the second one too and while I don’t hate the pickups, I don’t really love them either.

Thanks for the comments, lovely bees.
I don’t mind the one shoulder on the 1st dress, it’s the sleeve coming off of that shoulder that’s kind of whack. For the second fitting, I asked him to hem the skirt, add another lining because of static friction making the inner lining stick to my legs, remove the sleeve, add more little crystals to balance out the large crystals, add in a fabric belt, and fix the side zipper. For some reason, the zipper budges out on the side when I wear the dress. Who knows what the final outcome will be. Originally, I drew a design similar to Kate Middleton’s Jenny Packham dress, but I ended up with this design which looks nothing like my drawing. This designer tends to do his own thing.
I can’t return the 1st dress but I can return this 2nd one so I’ll try it on with heels this time when it arrives. For the 2nd dress, I’m thinking of making the skirt into something like the picture below. I don’t know if it can be done, but I’ll make an appt with our seamstress soon to talk about it. If there’s a chance that the dress will be ruin, I’ll just hem it and live with the pickups. There’s also that chance that the seamstress try to imitate a design incorrectly and end up with a mess.
I like this skirt below.
I’m afraid they’ll turn it into this mess. I would rather keep the pickups than have a skirt like the one below.

@eosin: I voted for the second dress first because of your body language in the dress you look much more confident second I like the deeper red with your skin tone much better. I dont hate the pickups on the dress at all but if you could change them the dress would still look great. So second dress all the way for me!

Both of those dresses are amazing! I don’t find pick ups to be dated…I actually like them a lot. The first dress is lovely too. I’d keep BOTH until you see the final results of the first, then make a decision.
