I would say outside a year is too soon. 🙂

there’s two answers to this question:

a) before you even have a boyfriend in the picture.
b) before getting engaged.

Take your pick 😉

I think you’re good to get serious at this point.  It seems like a lot of the other September 2011 brides have their dresses – I’ve been shopping but totally don’t know what I want yet and am starting to really think it’s time to make dress shopping a priority.  I definitely want to have my decision made before 6 months out, because some of the dresses seems to take months to arrive.

I ordered mine back in August. I definitely think it’s fine to go ahead and get serious about it!

My wedding is next August and I ordered my dress in September. It hasn’t come in yet – I’m hoping for a first fitting sometime after the holidays. So now definitely isn’t too soon!!

I am ordering mine today. I’d say hit those bridal stores! Many of them say it takes 3-6 months for a dress to come in and they want another 3-4 months to alter.

This is probably a good time to start seriously looking. If you are going to order it make sure you ask the salons how long it takes to get a dress in and then add a month to that just in case.

@bebefly – I guess I’m in trouble then…I went in “just to look” (first bridal store I’d *ever* been in), and somehow, THE dress just jumpped right on me and invited itself on the car ride to Mom’s house…  Foot in mouth

Go for it! Lots of salons take 5-6 months to get the dress ordered and you want to leave yourself plenty of time for alterations. I’d say book yourself a bunch of appointments for January and February and get going!

But once you find the right dress, don’t go to any more appointments – it might result in you second guessing your choice! I found a dress on my first day of dress shopping, but still continued looking which was fun but honestly also stressing me out as I started having second thoughts caused by all the gorgeous gowns out there.

I’m a September 24th bride and I went dress shopping Dec. 11th. I will purchase the dress come March.

I saw go now and try on so you see what styles and types look best on you. What looked great in the book looked HORRIBLE on me. I had to change up my dress style, veil choice et al. The sooner you do it, the less stress.

Remember it can take over six weeks for the dress to come in BEFORE alterations can be made.

I think you should start asap.  You don’t know how long it’ll take to find a dress, and sometimes they can take 8 months to come in, plus you need to allow time for alterations!  It’s different if you’re purchasing off the rack, but if you’re ordering, better get a move on it!

I am an August bride and I went shopping and purchased my dress at the end of November.  The estimated ship date from the designer is May 1st, so that will give me 3 months for alterations.

I feel good about that.  I didn’t feel ‘ready’ to shop before November, but I also wouldn’t have waited any later than January for fear of not having plenty of time for alterations.

I say you are good to go for sure now.  Definitely not too early.
