(((HUGS))) first off that sucks.  It sounds horrific, hot, sweaty ick.

I’m a curvy girl and I’m so sorry you had a crap ass time.  You worked your BUTT off, seriously 55lbs is so not anything to sneeze at.. that’s amazing.   You should have had the greatest time.

I went with my size 2 SIL to DB for her dress hell on a Saturday in October.  She wound up sitting on the floor sobbing because it was so hot, too many people and it took her consultant 20 min to pull a dress.  She finally just grabbed a dress to GTFO of there.  So please don’t think it’s you.

I went to DB on a Friday night, at 5pm and it was just me, my sil, 3 nieces and my Dad in the store.  No one else was there.  I had four consultants waiting on me.. just me.  It was so different than my SIL’s experience.  I implore you to give it all another go… just pick a weird time.  I mean seriously Friday night??? Hang in there!!

@jigga143:  I thought of you and your horrific experience tonight when I went to a local bridal shop.   So far in my search I have been to 2 David’s Bridals and 2 independent bridal shops.   I’m 56 and wear size 18/20 so I haven’t had high expectations.

I came to the realization tonight that brides are young, size 0 and have photographic memories to remember how they look in the dresses they have tried on.  All others need not apply.

Tonight at a highly regarded bridal shop, a consultant stuffed my 18/20 body into a size 14 gown.  This of course happened when a young minus zero was trying on her gown.  With her family in tow.   I should have stopped the consultant, but didn’t.  To her credit, I never got stuck in the dress, but walking out of the dressing room in front of 0’s family, with the gown so tight you could see my hyst scars and my arms straight in front of me because I couldn’t lower them was an image I won’t forget anytime soon.  I breathed a sigh of relief when she took the gown off…. that it actually came off.

I told them I was plus sized when I made the appt.   The told me they had gowns in my size.  Honestly, does it matter that the designers make plus sized gowns if stores don’t have them available to try on?

Jigga…i  had a similar experience dress shopping (i am a 14/16).  I visited every bridal store within my area and called dozens of others.  I was seriously considering driving 4 hours to minneapolis to visit the 2 plus size boutiques there but decided to just make a decision (dress shopping fatigue).  Where do you live?  you mentioned chicago and michigan in your post.  I know there is a plus size store in michigan, indiania as well as the two i mentioned in minnesota.  Thery were really nice about sending me pictures of dresses they had for me to try that fit what i was looking for So i knew if it was worth the drive.

I will also endorse the bonny 1201 if you can find a store to try it on at.  It was my front runner dress for a long time.  Super flattering/ feminine and a good price.  I decided to go for a  different style so i could sit down comfortably but i really love that dress for a mermaid style and as mentioned the smallest it comes in is 16w!

I am so sorry that happened to you!  I am a VERY plus size bride and the thought of trying on dresses in a salon made me want to throw up.  I ended up ordering one from plussizebridals.com.  They are a reputable dealer, their dresses are authentic, not cheap Chinese knock offs.  They have a lot of really nice dresses, including Mori Lee.  You can measure yourself and each manufacturer has their size chart listed.  AND if it doesn’t fit you can return it.  They have a pretty great return policy for a wedding dress company.  You should check them out.

The one i heard about in michigan is called bombshell outside of detroit i think.  One of the ladies at the MN store told me she might be able to get a sample from bombshell sent to her on loan….

@jigga143:  Also I went to Miss Pamela’s and it has large beautiful dressing rooms I mean 10 people could stand in there comfortably at least.  Also they only carry plus sizes.  I dreaded wedding dress shopping and for the mere fact that I did not want to have an experience like you did.  A salon making you feel awful.   Every girl should feel wonderful and beautiful.  Every girl should be able to try on a large selection of dresses to find the one.

I highly recommend going to Miss Pamela’s.  It is in a small town, but the service is great, they have over 200 dresses all plus size.  It is a wonderrful experience.  You will feel special and taken care of just like a bride should.  Please go and if you do let me know if you truly found your dream dress.   Also be open to trying a lot of dresses in many styles.  Until you put them on it is so hard to tell what they will look like on you.  Which dress will make you look and feel Beautiful.

I went to Davids bridal 3 times and tried on at least 20 dresses before i found the most flattering one at terry costa, a maggie sottero sabelle , it gave me a figure and everyone said it was stunningly beautiful! It sells for 1650 plus tax, im selling mine right now, and wanted to share with you on how frustrated i was with dress shopping, i could not sleep i was so stressed. my dress is size 18 but is corset so shoud fit sizes 14 to 18.

First of all, WTG on your weight loss!  That’s awesome!  And I’m sorry you had such a bad experience right off the bat!  ๐Ÿ™

I’m just here with a ‘never surrender!!’ battlecry.  Whatever you do, don’t give up and settle for a dress you don’t absolutely love.  I had an awful time shopping for a dress (bought a store sample, got home and realized the consultant had bled on it when she cut her finger, brought it back, got cold feet in the meantime and ordered a dress that I couldn’t try on because the sample was way too small, and ended up with a completely unflattering dress that I spent a fortune on) and wish someone had told me not to give up!  It is soooo frustrating that stores don’t have samples to fit a range of women, and you’re right – don’t order something you can’t try on.  Good luck and keep us posted!

If you live in Michigan, please try Bombshell Bridal in St. Clair Shores. They specialize in plus size gals. They have a facebook page. I went there, and even though I didn’t buy my dress there, they had dresses pretty much ONLY in plus size sampeles. Even the mannequins are curvy!
