Hi! I have been waiting and waiting to try on dresses, as I’m super self-conscience that I am not a size, 8 or 10 or 12. . I have been wearing about a size 14 in street clothes and want to make sure I go someplace that has some samples I can actually try on – any suggestions?

I would suggest David’s Bridal. I’m a size 20 and was disappointed and embarrassed by the crappy selection at bridal salons.
I went to David’s and chose about a dozen dresses to try on (out of a selection of several dozen).
I wound up finding ‘the dress’ there and it was even on sale!
However, even if you don’t want to buy your dress from David’s, you can probably try on various styles to get an idea of what they look like on you. Then you may feel more confident about ordering a dress if you can’t try it on because the sample is too small.

I had the same issue of wanting to be able to try on dresses that would fit a size 14 in the DC area. After a disasterous trip to a high end store where the sales lady suggested I go to David’s try on stuff and then come back to her store to buy the more expensive version of the dress I thought I would have no luck. I ended up buying a couple of local bride magazines and the knot’s quarterly publication and at the end they have an index of stores by state. I called all the stores in my area and asked ahead of time what they had. Some were really nice about it and told me not to come in; others not so much, but I ended up finding a great dress.

To start, I would suggest a place like "House of Brides" (I went to the one in Glen Ellyn)–despite their bad reputation, they have a nice section of gowns in larger sizes, and the women there were very friendly! You can really get a feel for your style at a place like HOB that has such a large selection, plus they let you take pictures.
Also, as I recall, the sample shop "white CHICAGO" downtown had a section of dresses that were size 12 and above. You could also ask when you make your appointment about how many they carry in size 14 or higher–I’m sure they’d give you a good estimate!
The sample shop "Here Comes the Bride" in Addison also had many samples that were over size 12, if you’re interested in sample gowns. They also had a few dresses there that they could order new.
I believe "Eva’s Bridal" in Oak Lawn had many dresses over size 12, too!
Good luck and have fun dress shopping!

David bridal is good.,.. but Dont go to the one on Harlem Ave. BAD experiences reported there from my bridesmaids. Terrible customer service. They actually left and went back to another location out of thier way.
