@vivalasylvia: If you’re looking at places like BCBG, Nordstrom and Ann Taylor, don’t forget to look in their outlet stores. I bought mine which was originally close to $700 for approx. $300 at one of their outlet locations.
Below are some of the BCBG examples I’ve seen in their outlet stores. Good luck! 🙂
When Fi used to work in the midwest, I looked up some bridal shops and I always wanted to try Brandi’s Bridal Galleria Outlet. It’s supposed to be quite large. I never got to go, but here’s the address. It’s no longer advertised on the website, but it’s still worth calling the number to make sure they’re open.
1975 Pawlisch Dr.
Rockford, IL 61112
Here’s another sample gown shop:
BHLDN also has a store in Chicago, and they recently had a big sale online, so it might be worth checking out in store whether or not they have some seriously marked down samples/merch.
House of Brides is a large online retailer, but they also have several brick and mortar stores, one of which is in Chicago. 730 North Franklin Street, Suite 300
Chicago, IL 60610 You can do a price based search on bestbridalprices and weddingshoppeinc to see what kind of wedding dresses are under $500. You can also compare their prices with House of Brides, and if you decide to order from any of them, they all have a price match guarantee. There are plenty of wedding dresses from Voyage by Mori Lee under $500. Here are a few examples of the bridal gowns I found from these retailers within your budget:

You could also try local etsy sellers. Here some of what I found on etsy from the Chicago area:
Some of the chinese websites that might be safer to go with are hedybridal, simplybridal, and topwedding, For Him and For Her, and ConieFox. Hedybridal has a store in CA, and simplybridal has showrooms in NYC and LA. They carry their own designs. Some brides have also have relatively good experiences with Light In The Box. This bride purchased her gown from Light In The Box and had a pretty good experience: http://prettypreened.blogspot.com/2013/01/wedding-wednesday-dress.html
If you check out department stores, Sue Wong makes 20’s style dresses with lots of beading and detail:
Adrianna Papell also makes some affordable wedding dresses that are similar to designer wedding dresses. She has one similar to Jenny Packham:
You could also try looking at white prom dresses. You can get some major blingage with white prom dresses for under $500. Here are some:
White by Vera Wang- David’s Bridal $299.00
I got mine from Vows in Boston MA. They also have an online store — bridepower.com and they’ll ship dresses to brides. Highly recommend them, they carry a lot of designer items, so you can get a great dress for a steal.
Ruche Bridal is also very lovely! I wish I had seen this before!
Dessy also have wedding dresses. They ship you sizes and you can try different ones on.
David’s Bridal has some new ones that I had not seen before:
My dress was $399. It was half price at a sample sale. Yes it was 7 years old, but it was lovely, all lace, a Casablanca and it fit perfectly. (I was not wearing a bra so my chest looks crumply)
I also bought a few more dresses for cheap;
This was $99 (David’d Bridal)
This was $175 (Jcrew)
This was $75
Oleg Cassini Ball gown from David’s Bridal, originally $850, I got for $449.
I second trying preownedweddingdresses.com
