Okay so its not a wedding dress, its my prom dress but I figured this would be a good place to ask. I have this dress that has been passed down from my nana to my aunt and mom and now I want to wear it but it doesnt zip past my ribcage. When I put it on it zips all the way until my ribcage and then there is about a 3 inch gap over it. It is a strapless dress and I dont belive it has boning but unfortunatly it is made with a fabric that was discontinued over 40 years ago so there isnt an option to add panneling. Is there anything I could do to make it so the dress fits? Would adding a lace up back work? Is that even possible?

Posting photos will help. I was in garment production for years and could give you some ideas, but not without seeing it

I’d think it would be possible to replace the zipper with a corset back.

Depending on the material, a corset back is definitely an option. The zipper on my best friends dress BROKE 2 DAYS before our school ball. We took it to our local seamstress and she replace the entire zipper with a corset back.
