So I have a dress dilemma. First of all, I’ve tried on probably over 50 dresses, and I’m naturally a picky shopper and have always been so indecisive. Long story short, I bought a dress at a sample sale and ended up upset all weekend because I didn’t love the dress. I eventually came to the conclusion that I actually hated the dress. The store where I bought it has been SO generous to let me return the sample for in-store credit. Essentially, I am now tied to that store to find my dress or I lose the in-store credit (not an option).
I have tried on just about every dress in that store, and have ended up with a few good contenders. I’m so torn because I love ball gown, but also lately have been gravitating towards lace fitted dresses (total opposites, I know). I tried on a dress today (that I originally saw on pinterest) and although I love the dress online, the sample totally did not fit me, so I think it looks terrible on. HOWEVER I think the dress has the potential to be stunning when altered correctly to fit my body (bigger bottom half, small chest).
I think a seamstress will need to add cups to the dress to give that part shape and it will need to be taken in around the waist/chest area (and I will need to order a dress larger than the sample in this pic so it’s not as tight on the bottom half). Keep in mind I’m trying this on after Thanksgiving and a big move, so I’m sitting around 15 lbs. heavier than my ideal (and previously achieved) weight. Yikes.. haha. I will be able to lose that no prob by the wedding.
Now to my questions (finally, sorry..) Does anyone have experience ordering a dress when the sample simply did not fit and did not look great, but then after alterations the final dress was perfect? I so badly want this to be “the” dress but I’m worried if it doesn’t look good now, there is only so much alterations can do. I’ve tried on similar styles and the dresses look great from the back, but the front (chest area) always looks like I need more structure. I’m wondering if I would be taking too big of a risk by ordering this dress. Not sure if I should go with something that I know looks good on as-is. The store told me their alterations team can do anything, but I’d like to hear from people who have experience in similar situations.
(I’m 5’7” and usually wear around a size 8 if that helps. Should be a 4/6 by my wedding in Oct. 2015)
Thanks in advance!!
The first pic is of me in the sample, and the others are of the dress from the designer’s website. It’s Augusta Jones, Skyler.
