Our two year wedding anniversary is coming up (yes, I’ve been addicted to the bee that long)! In order to celebrate I am hoping to surprise the Hubs with a romantic drive up the California coast. We have a week worth of vacation time and I would like to take our time driving up to SF (maybe up the 1?), spend a few days in SF and then drive back a bit more directly.
So, my Bees…Do you have any tips for us? What should we see on the way? Anything we can’t miss in San Francisco? Ideas for saving $$?
The hive never lets me down! Thanks in advance for any input…I really appreciate it.

I would spend a day or maybe half a day in Monterey. It’s a very quaint little town that’s really romantic. They have a great aquarium and canary row, from the Steinbeck novel, is really fun. Another fun thing might be to drive out to Sonoma or Napa for a day and do some wine tasting. There are some fabulous restaurants there as well, (we really enjoyed The Girl & The Fig. It’s a short drive from SF. If neither of you have been to Alcatraz before I highly recommend it. I’ve been to SF plenty of times but only went there on my most recent trip and was really impressed. The history is amazing and the audio tour is so well done. The island itself is also quiet beautiful.

Early congrats to you! What about driving through Pismo Beach or Santa Barbara? I want to go to Pismo Beach and ride dune buggies and do wine tasting in Santa Barbara.

The whole Highway 1 drive is incredible. You should definitely check out Monteray Bay and the Aquarium. Also, if you are interested, Hearst Castle is on the way by San Simean. The whole house really is incredible. And by the beach there you can see elephant seals.

i second monterey. fisherman’s wharf is the best, and there’s free chowder samples all the way down.
also, stop by santa cruz..downtown is awesome, the redwoods are awesome..i lovee santa cruz..
and take a look to see if there are any events going on while you’re in sf (with yelp or sfgate.com). there’s ALWAYS something going on in the city, it could be fun to check out the scene.

Santa Barbara is nice, Carmel/Monterey is nicer, Santa Cruz is fun, and, if you’re into that sort of thing, I would DEFINITELY take a day trip from SF to Sonoma! We were there on our honeymoon and it’s beautiful, and fun!

I’m going that route as well and am SO looking forward to it! In Monterey we’re staying in Monterey Bay Inn – looks really promising, I think: http://www.tripadvisor.dk/Hotel_Review-g32737-d78443-Reviews-Monterey_Bay_Inn-Monterey_Monterey_Peninsula_California.html

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! You all have no idea how much I appreciate it. The bees are always such a great help.
So far we are for sure doing Hearst Castle, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Alcatraz. I think Sonoma sounds great too, thanks for the tip, Spaniel! And Sewing, we are looking for a good spot to see some of those giant Redwoods!
If you ladies have any more ideas/suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks so much again for all your contributions so far. They will really add a lot to our trip!
