I am confused as to when the STD and invites go out for a destination wedding.
Wedding is early January 2014.
I want the save the dates out soon – still finalizing details. I hope they will be in mailboxes early February. On them, I was going to put:
our wedding date
our wedding website
and “formal invitation to follow”
Then i was thinking of sending the formal invitations out in July (6 months before the wedding).
The confusion and question is that the down payment for our guests will be before the invites go out… is that normal? are the guests supposed to find that info out from our wedding website?
would you send the invites out earlier? or would you wait to send the save the dates a little longer until you had the info needed for the down payment?
thank you SO much for your help.

Hmm… I would probably send the down payment info with the invitations – so I would send the invites a little earlier.
We’re probably sending out Save-The-Date Cards actually a good 14 months ahead and then send the invitations about 8 months ahead, but we’re traveling to Scotland which is a pretty good distance for most of my family and they need to know ahead of time for calling off work, etc.
Maybe send the invites 2months or so before the down payment is due?

@future_mrs_m: I felt the same way as you about how this was all supposed to be organized. We sent out save the dates as an email about 10 months before the wedding and on it had the wedding date, the price and our destiantion wedding planners information so they could call her to book. We had a due date for deposits to be made by a certain date so they could get the price listed on the save the date. If people decided to book after the due date the price was subject to change from the amount we had on the email. We now have 58 confirmed guests and they had to pay $250 to book (which was in October) and they have to pay off the remainder of the trip the end of February.
I then plan to send invites just to the confirmed guests about 2 months before the wedding date..on the invite will have our wedding website and will have more information about things to do around the resort and our wedding party and other stuff. I choose to do it this way beause I didnt want to spend so much on postage and waste paper and the invites I bought were quite expensive.
I see you are a fellow Ontario bee! Yay! Where is your destination wedding?

Thanks for you help everyone!
I just spoke with my travel agent today and actually decided against sending STD… I have been engaged for a year and it will be another year before the wedding and I have spoken personally with at least 85% of guests and told them it would be early January 2014 – i think this will act as my STD.
I decided to send out the invites late february, so 10 – 11 months prior. I think this is a good option for me because then i can include all the info (cost etc) for my guests to book.
@ sweetchiquita12 i love your idea to send out an invite 2 months before to confirmed guests…
we still have to technically finalize our destination, but we have chosen Gran Bahia Principe El Portilo in the Dominican. I see your wedding is coming up – bet you’re getting excited!!

@future_mrs_m: Oh wow I stayed at Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo this summer! It was in Samana. We were in DR for a destination wedding in La Vega and then went to the resort afterward as a big group. Nice!
I am getting married in DR in April of 2014 and am trying to figure out the same thing. Sounds like your TA is requiring the deposits that early. I need to get a TA soon. Which agency are you using? I was planning to send Save-The-Date Cards 12-13 months in advance and invites 6-8 months in advance. Now I’m thinking about doing e-mail Save-The-Date Cards to save time and enrgy collecting addresses. Not looking forward to that part!

We sent out Save-The-Date Cards 10 months in advance (plus website up) and our invites will go out about 8 months before… Which is in two weeks!!
