I am not pregnant and do not color my hair so I probably shouldn’t even be responding BUT . . . I thought for some reason this was an old wives tale and that there’s actually no danger in it at all? My frame of reference was Kelly Ripa bemoaning her roots while she was pregnant “because that was back when we all thought dying our hair was bad for the baby.”

It is very safe to dye your hair while pregnant.  The dyes they use now days do not have the chemicals they used to.  In fact my colorist for coloring my hair is actually pregnant herself.  And I got my hair colored about 3 times or so when I was pregnant

It is ok, but there are things you can do to make it even more ok (if that makes sense):avoiding dying hair in the first trimester, going to a more natural color so you aren’t dying so often, and using a sulfate free dye.

My midwife told me it was totally fine to dye my hair because the formula has improved so much over the years. She did recommend waiting until the second trimester, though, in part because the smell can be overwhelming to a sensitive pregnant nose (especially if you do it yourself at home, like I do).

According to my doctor and hairdresser(not that she is a medical professional) it is perfectly safe. However I was advised that it’s better to use foils that dye directly on your scalp, but I only highlight anyways. I had my hair done a week before I got my BFP and had it done again in my 1st trimester.

My doctor said it was fine, but if possible to wait until after the first trimester.  But if you are home dying, make sure you are in a well ventilated area!

My hair stylist, will not dye hair for her pregnant clients. She says there hasnt been enough research either way, so she would rather be safe then sorry. So I stopped dying my hair.

@foreignbride:  I am not 100% sure on henna. I did a quick search and it looks like there are safe ways to do it, but I would definately just ask your doctor about it first.

@foreignbride:  totally safe! Henna is all natural and uses no chemicals….I know pregnant women who have dyed their skin (henna tatooes) while pregnant.

I dyed my hair today and at 18w she said it was 100% OK except my stylist said the color might not catch on or might be off….just because some women’s hair changes during pregnancy. Mine was fine & color was just as I expected it to be.

Do not use Henna!!!! Especially if you ever want to color your hair at a salon or at home.  Henna is made with metallic salts and is known to have bad reactions when used! Just a FYI!
