@mjv613:  You’ll find that probably over half the ladies on this forum have had a major say in their engagement ring, so it’s definitely not weird!

What kind of styles are you interested in? Solitaire? Halo? 3 stone? Diamond? Gemstone? Moissanite?

There was a poll awhile ago and it seemed 50% or more got their rings from local jewelers, the other high amount was online. Blue Nile, James Allen (fun site to play on), B2C, Adiamor for diamonds and different sites for Moissanite.

Mine is from a local large jeweler, its a .85, F, SI1 3EX

Mine came from a local jeweller, which was amazing if you really wanted the personalized experience. I didn’t have much say in my ring, but the one time we went in there together before the ring was bought was amazing and dealing with them for our wedding bands has been just as great!

Not sure what you’re looking for but I will post info on mine in case it helps in any way!

We got my engagement ring from Diamonds by Lauren (they specialize in colored diamonds), and my wedding band from Birks.

You should go to local jewelers and try on rings (with or without your boyfriend) to see what you like and don’t like.

Do you have any idea for his budget (you don’t need to post it, if so). Just curious because that would probably help you decide where you want to start & what you want to see. For example, do you wish and dream for only a diamond (and that is okay if you are), or are you open to alternatives (e.g., moissy, colored gems, etc.)? Did he tell you “$20K minimum” so you’re looking for a more elaborate setting? What are your tastes in jewelry (conservative/simple, “bling it on”, etc.)?

Just a little something to give folks an idea of what you might be into or not into. 🙂

@mjv613:  How exciting! My boyfriend inherited his grandmother’s ring so we didn’t end up doing much to it other than changing a yellow gold band to white gold.

Be very careful with online sites like Blue Nile… their diamonds aren’t GIA certified (although they will tell you they are certified but they won’t tell you that it’s by a no-name, no-klout company) and they will sell you a diamond they claim is a G color but truly a J or worse. My boyfriend and I went to a local Boston jeweler who specialized in resetting family heirlooms. They were amazing. If you happen to be in that area, private message me and I will send you the name of it. I attached a pic of my ring below (because he hasn’t proposed yet but I have the pic of the finished ring… eek! Literally dying to wear it.)

Center stone is a 2.4ct RB K/VVS2 with three yellow diamonds on each side.

Enjoy this time and try to get your boyfriend to have some input on the ring. It will make you both feel like a part of the experience!

@mjv613:  Definitely visit a local jeweler and try on as many rings as possible so you can get an idea for size and style that you like! Certain rings just won’t fit your personality… or suit your finger the right way. Definitely educate yourself on the 4 Cs if you are going to go the diamond route. Sapphires are gorgeous and come in many, many colors I never knew about before joining this site. I want a lavender sapphire so badly now!! Check out the rings on Etsy, there are so many unique styles and designs. I really love rose gold now too 🙂

Anyways, my ring is a 1 ct eq. old european cut moissanite in a double halo setting. It was custom made at Joseph Schubach jewelers out of Scottsdale, Az. My finger size is 7 for reference.

@mjv613:  Lots of girls pick out their own ring! Here’s my rings, we had the engagement ring custom made at a local  jeweler.  .96 center diamond and 7 point halo diamonds in yellow gold. The Wedding ring is .50 carat in yellow gold. Size 7 1/4 finger. . Also from a local jeweler:
