So, I’m 6w4d pregnant and my insatiable thirst is getting WAY worse. It’s now at the point where i’ll drink (mainly water, occasionally I’ll have a V8 but 99% its just water) until I feel sick – but I’m STILL thirsty!
I don’t want to seem like I’m freaking out over nothing because I know its common to be thirsty during pregnancy but I don’t feel like this is a normal level of thirst, and I don’t have another appointment for another month (september 13)!
So…what would you do? Would you wait the month till your next appointment or would you call and make an appointment?

I don’t want to alarm you, but this sounds like diabetes insipidus. I’m not a doctor, but I have 2 weeks to go until I’m a registered nurse. Diabetes insipidus is where the body can’t conserve water. Are you peeing lots? Is your urine really pale or normal colour for you? I would get this checked out immediately, because thirst and peeing lots can interfere with your blood pressure.

@Roux: I’m not really peeing that much, honestly, I don’t know where its all going! And when I do pee its a normal color.

Your body is almost doubling it’s blood volume, it’s normal to be more thirsty than usual. I would call your doctor, of course, but I’ve had the same thing for the duration of my pregnancy and to be quite honest I’m sure your doctor would rather you be getting adequate amounts of fluid than not enough 🙂

@Navy_Wife: The extra water intake could be just because during pregnancy you make more body fluids, (blood, amniotic fluid etc.) Do you have any swelling in your lower limbs? Puffy ankles or knees?
Instead of drinking just water, you could try drinking some gatorade, or hydralyte (not sure if you have hydralyte in US, its a sachet you mix with water, you probably had it as a kid when you had gastro) these drinks will keep your electrolytes stable.

yeah i would switch back and forth between water and beverages with eletrolytes – gatorade, smart water, vitamin water. they will help you stay hydrated.
i’d give you doctor a call just to describe how you feel and find out if it warrants a visit sooner than later. but just remember that the first trimester can be such a whirlwind, the thirst could subside any day!

I think it’s normal but it also never hurts to just call the dr so you can have peace of mind.
I have been so thirsty during my pregnany and I also crave REALLY juicy fruits (watermelon, oranges, etc) because I am just so thirsty!
But, why don’t you just call the dr to ask and that way you wont have to worry about the “what ifs”

Always call the doctor. That’s what they are there for. It’s probably nothing, but better to call. If they are concerned they’ll have you come in. Best of luck.
By The Way, I’m about the same stage in my pregnancy as you, and I’m pretty darn thirsty as well.

I’m very thirsty as well so you definitely aren’t alone. I know I already mentioned it but take a look in some of the pregnancy books, I know one (What to Expect I think) mentioned insatiable thirst being a symptom of something. I’d definitely call the doctor. Better safe than sorry!
