hello phoenix bees!
question – i just got married two weeks ago (it’s already been two weeks!
) and am about to embark on the name change adventure. i assumed the social security office was my first stop, but somebody at work told me go for the dmv first to get a new driver’s license with my new name. he said it’d be much easier to do the ss name change once i have identification with my new name on it.
i had a plan of hitting up the ss office tomorrow early afternoon and then the dmv once i had my new ss card. but his suggestion sorta makes sense and now i’m wondering if i should do my driver’s license change first.
any bees in phoenix know which is the easiest way? how did ya’ll do it?

Congrats! If you haven’t already gone through this process, go to the SS office first. You can’t do anything else until you do that.

Wow, did they give you incorrect info. You have to go to SS first. You have to have proof that you changed your name there before you can change your license. Before the SS change, you with your married name technically don’t exist. The SS office needs your marriage license, not your new ID, to do the name change (along with a passport or driver’s license + birth certificate)

He is completely wrong. You cannot get a new drivers license without going to SS first. Crayfish is right, you need to bring your current ID, birth certificate, and marriage license to change your name.
