What about Wilmington, NC/Myrtle Beach, SC?  I live in that area and there’s lots to do for young people (I’m 22).

If you like winter sports, outlet shopping, etc, the Poconos Mountains are really nice.  I go with a group of friends each year over New Year’s.

I’d suggest NYC, but it’s insanely expensive to stay here over the holidays.

@kate169: Wow, I grew up a couple beaches away from Sunset Beach!  It is pretty warm here even in December, so if you want traditional winter weather, its probably not the best choice haha.

@kate169: Driving from DC to Boston is around 8-9 hrs, so add on the drive from where you are in VA to DC and you have the drive length.

Since you are driving, what about somewhere like Asheville NC or Southern Pines?

Annapolis, MD is a really cute town, though I’m not sure about nightlife, if that’s what you’re looking for. I’m also biased, as I work in and live close to Philly, but it’s a good time!

And I second Myrtle Beach- I love it!

Charleston, SC! not sure if thats too far of a drive for you but totally worth it. its a beautiful, historic and very romantic city with tons to do – lots of shopping and site seeing, historic and ghost tours, great nightlife and so many good restaurants you wont even know where to start.  Though it might be cold for a beach day but you could def take a walk (beaches are only 15 minutes from historic downtown and you might get super lucky and have a crazy 65 degree day in the middle of december, it happens in the carolinas) Also check out the James Island Christmas Lights! AMAZING!

i was just down there last weekend 🙂

Another suggestion I have is to visit Fallingwater in Pennsylvania…it’s about 3.5/4 hours from NoVA/DC and it’s beautiful there.

Darling Husband and I went there for 2 nights a few years ago and we loved it. There’s no nightlife, but the area is beautiful. We had dinner at a beautiful hotel not far from there called Summit Inn. http://www.summitinnresort.com/
