I just picked up some crackers to keep at my desk. I get hungry between meals (and so far, ignoring my hunger results in either heartburn or nausea.. or both) because otherwise I was grabbing bagels or tea biscuits from a coffee shop at work. I’ve been bringing apples and veggies too. A quick granola bar or apple sauce is good too in a pinch.

Only trying to be helpful here, but did you actually discuss with your doctor the total calorie intake that you need (not just the general rule of thumb that you add X amount to your current diet)? 1800 doesn’t seem like a lot to me, but I’m not a doctor.

That said, I think your biggest calorie source is going to be protein. Things you might have stayed away from (eggs and cheese coming to mind as a former dieter) are really stellar meals/snacks.  I do a fair amount of string cheese as snacks.

Drinking your calories can be easier. How about making shakes for yourself with greek yogurt (protein) and frozen berries, bananas, mango etc. A dash of vanilla extract and a handful of spinach (serisouly- you cant taste it) for iron and other great minerals such as folate.

Then you can sip between meals.

In between meals I snack on healthly things. A couple easy things to keep in my desk at work is trail mix, fruit cups & apple sauce. I always bring a couple pieces of fruit with me too.

1800 sounds a little low to me. Have you talked to an OB about your diet? Easy, quality calories can be found in nuts, cheese, and hard boiled eggs.

I can’t image 1800 being nearly enough!  I force feed myself breakfast- local omega eggs, lots of veggies, and cheese of course!  I think milk and cheese, nuts (larabars are the best!), huge smoothies.  Walnuts are one of the best things you can eat for baby and high in calories.

I also make healthy nachos- tons of beans and cheese and avocado and tomato.  Beans are the best!  Lots of protein, fiber, folate.  I also love eating carrot sticks as a snack.  They also make chips that are sweet potato (Glories brand is the best) and sweet potato is another great one.  I snack on frozen mango (yum!)  I put tons of greens in my breakfast and lots in my smoothies…

And while not perfect, there is always chocolate milk 🙂

@Mrs.Jansen:  I’m interested to know what your MD says.  I am in a similar situation (was calorie restricting and bumped myslef up to 1800 too).  My MD isn’t seeing me until 11/6 so I don’t want to mess stuff up before then….. I’m significantly overweight,  so from what I can find this number seems OK for now… it looks like the “extra” calories are more important in later trimesters.  Let me know what your MD comes up with!

@Mrs.Jansen:  Like my mom says, the baby takes what it needs. Trust me. If you’re eating a half decent diet, the baby will be fine.

IMO just do what you’re doing for now and ask your doctor at the appt. As long as you are taking prenatals the baby will get what it needs at this stage. I wouldn’t stress as many women in the first trimester are so sick they can’t eat or throw it all up so they end up losing  weight and they are ok. I ate a horrible diet because I was so sick and the doctor said it was fine just take the prenatals.
