DH and I do this a lot, it’s just the 2 of us. If we have people visiting we would NOT do it, or get rid of something we had shared. We both drink out of the milk carton, we go through it so fast that it’s gone in less than a day. We’d never do that if guests were there 🙂

I double dip mostly when no one else is looking;) hehe

That’s what disgusts me too, and why I made DH stop doing it!
When I had throat issues I was sucking on spoonfuls of honey (I get tasty local fruit flavoured ones) to try to stop coughing at night. I would easily go through 5 spoons in a bad night!

If it’s the last portion and we’re finishing it and throwing the jar away, I don’t see the big deal.

FI saw me chugging milk from the container once and said “we should both really stop that before we have kids” O_o

oh lord, I can totally picture a kid trying to do it and not being strong enough to hold up the jug, so not only do they get their goober kid-mouth all over it, but then they drop it upside down all over themselves/the kitchen. I’m getting hives just imagining that mess, haha!
right!??!?! How can someone be so casual about so many food hygiene things and then be such a nazi about spoon freshness?!?!?! It is madness!

I do with peanut butter that’s just mine and I know no one else will be using it though most of the time it ends up being just one spoonful or the end of a container. If I make something I always buy new ingredients when it comes to things like this…even if I know I didn’t double dip into it I like knowing I used new fresh ingredients in something I am baking to share with others.

omg my bf licks everything while he’s preparing food for us and it totally grosses me out. I have an aunt that does it; she says it adds “flavor” *gag* I don’t do it ever, if I’m eating something out of a jar and I want another scoop, I’ll get another spoon. I don’t even want to come across my germs after they’ve been festering in a jar for days or weeks, much less anyone else’s. Yikes!

once a utensil touches lips or tongue, it does not go back in the container. maybe only cleaning out the bottom of the ice cream container.
this is a huge pet peeve of mine. not only is this just gross, doing this spreads so many germs and bacteria to the food. i am very aware of safe food handling.
i once saw a friend of mine put leftover salsa that was sitting out and being eaten, back in the large jar in the fridge. that just mixed with the good salsa and tainted the whole jar. yuck. the next day, she brought out chips and salsa again. i passed.

if i witnessed that, i don’t think i could eat their cooking.

I eat peanut butter straight from the jar, but I just get a big spoonful and don’t double dip. My husband will not eat food that someone else has touched or double dipped in, but if it were just me, I would double dip into the peanut butter. I will double dip in something that is “mine,” such as salsa which my husband will not touch. But at other people’s houses, I will get a plate to put whatever it is on, as opposed to just getting new spoons to scoop the food out of whatever container it is in.

We’re the only ones who eat our food, so…whatever. We double dip (unless it’s easier to put whatever into another container), especially peanut butter.

it’s just DH and i and we don’t share the stuff that we eat out of jars. he likes creamy PB and i like chucky so we each have our own jar. i drink milk and he doesn’t so i drink out of the container. he’ll use some for cereal sometimes but it doesn’t bother him that i drink out it. we both eat ice cream out of the container. we don’t have people over since our apartment is so small so that’s not an issue either.

If I do this – which is rare – I make sure my spit doesn’t touch my utensil so that it hopefully doesn’t go back into the container. I’ll take a bunch of small bites and only polish off my utensil on the last bite. If I want more after that one bite, I’ll get a new utensil!
My mom’s brainwashed me to think that spit will spoil foods but actually, SO does this all the time with his own food and he hasn’t had a problem… 😛

oh also I don’t allow my husband to drink out of containers because he’s a backwasher. It’s disgusting!
