I’ve never bought a wedding dress online, but I do buy clothes from ebay and etsy a lot. Here’s my .02:

1. Know your body and go with what you KNOW will look good–not what you think might look good or looks amazing on the mannequin–a cut that never fails.

2. My rule is never buy from a seller who’s rating is lower than your body temperature. And read the negative reviews–assess whether they’re flukes or indicative of larger problems.

3. MEASURE, MEASURE, MEASURE. And, since we’re talking about a wedding dress, I might get myself measured by a tailor.

4. I personally don’t buy from sellers unless they have a return policy. I’m sure you can and it can be just fine, but it’s happened too often that something hasn’t worked for me to relax the rule. You also don’t want to get burned by sellers who fail to disclose a stain or a rip or something (yes, you have some recourse as a buyer on eBay, but that doesn’t go far and it’s a big pain).

5. Since wedding dresses look really different on the hanger, I would avoid purchasing from a seller unless they furbish a picture of the garment on at least a mannequin or even better, a real person. And it should be pictures from different angles.

Also, wedding dresses often have complicated constructions. Unless the dress is vintage or one-of-a-kind, I might consider trying to see if there’s a local bridal salon or store that has the dress so you can try it on in person before buying it off eBay.
