Oh how cute! I love that idea. (I would plant mine!).

But you could do seeds/bulb instead.

A little humming bird feeder.

A recycled wind chime.

A birdhouse / butterfly house

If I think of more I’ll edit.

The other argument is that people in apartments can’t plant them due to being indoors. But that doesn’t hold water since a sapling is first planted in a regular planter (which can easily be placed indoors) and then transplanted into the ground when it gets too big for a pot. Others won’t plant them either way.

As far as favors go, the general consensus is to either give edibles or skip them entirely. Guests will not miss them if they are not there and the money can easily be spent on something else more important.

Why don’t you pay for a bunch of trees to be planted somewhere and then just tell the guests that. Planting a tree near a house is awkward – you have to find the right place in your garden, assuming you have one (eg my parents have a yard but no room for a tree). I couldn’t plant a tree anyway – I live in an apartment and I’m not going to drag a tree around the country with me when I move.

If you do want to give a favor, pick something local. We did lip balm from a local bee / honey company.
