I would love to be able to donate but probably don’t qualify due to suffering from depression. For that same reason, though, I’d be afraid of my reaction to the hormone regimen.

Not worth it if you’re doing it for the money. It’s very invasive and painful.

I am in no way claiming to be an expert on this subject, but I wrote a 12 page paper on egg donation for a Bioethics class a couple years ago..

The hormones that you have to take in the month leading up to donation are CRAZY, and they really are linked to fertility problems in the future.

Be careful, Bee. As financially sound it may seem, and as altrusitic your intentions may be, put your potential future children and your future partner first.

I signed up for it about a year ago (wanted to donate before that, but didn’t have any facilities in the area I lived in previously) and got close to donating about six months ago, but then I started a new job and it just wasn’t the right timing. I honestly didn’t even know that they paid so much when I signed up for it… I just thought that the idea of doing something to help someone struggling is just a nice thing to do, especially since, like you, I am not attached to DNA. Plus the science behind it fascinates me and I am not sensitive to medical procedures or afraid of discomfort/pain. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to donate myself, because I believe the cut-off age is 30 and I am currently pregnant and will give birth when I am 29.

My sisters have donated though and while taking the hormones wasn’t fun for them, they had successful retrievals. One of them even donated to the same couple twice, so they are actual full-blood siblings! It’s really awesome.

I probably wouldn’t do it for 4k, but closer to 10k… I’d probably seriously consider it.  I admit I probably would never have considered it before doing IVF cause it does sound scary if you’ve never done it, but after having done a IVF retreival 8x now, I don’t think it’s a very big deal anymore.  I had no side effects from the meds at all.  It’s 12-14 days of shots, a retreival, and then I was back to normal pretty much walking out of the office 7 of the 8 times.  At the worst time, it was 7 days of bloat and minor OHSS.

Hormones effects everyone so differently. I️ did IVF to get pregnant, and all the shots and retrieval was not bad at all (I️ actually had LESS symptoms from shots than my usual monthly pms symptoms). Retrieval- a little sore, take some ibuprofen, work the next day. If it’s something you did a lot research on, and you genuinely want to do it – ignore the nay sayers. The decision is entirely yours. And it does not negatively impact your fertility- ppl use IVF to actually get pregnant. What contradiction that would be.
