Something I haven’t realized until now is that I don’t usually see rings where the center stone is covered in more than 6 prongs (8,10,etc) like the ever so famous Diana Sapphire. At least, one that has been made recently and is not an antique. The exception is for custom pieces, which usually do have more prongs, perhaps to protect the precious gems and their value. Some examples below :
I’ve noticed I primarily find these multi-prong settings with a diamond halo, and usually sapphire (why?)
I finally decided on a “dress” ring, but the only picture I have of it is poor quality, and won’t be here until next week. Its a sapphire with a diamond halo, and although purchased as a preowned estate piece, no evidence of if it is actually antique or not. After paying for this ring (as detailed as I am) I somehow overlooked that the oval sapphire center was encompassed by eight prongs. Now I’m intriqued to see other’s similar pieces with so many prongs!

Terrible pic so apologies but that is a modern 8 prong basket setting. That ring is not mine, just one I tried on but I am having the same setting made at the minute for my moissy.

So pretty! This is a gorgeous example of a modern 8 prong – very unique.
Wow, what a massive set. That’s stunning – I love double claw prongs, you still don’t see them too much especially on what looks like a round.
I think I’ve concluded that eight and ten prongs on other shapes are pretty much antique, I didn’t see it before but I just noticed that the ring I purchased is vintage, so much for paying attention to detail

Kinda funny. I have a heirloom sapphire and diamond ring that’s very old and it has 8 possibly 9 prongs for the center. It’s hard to tell because the setting was very warped. I was given it that way when I was a smal child. I plan to restore it hopefully next year or the following once we’re done with all our wedding things.
I never paid attention to the number of prongs in relation to older sapphire rings but I see it now.
