sarajones:  Sorry dude but the “importance for extravagence” “whatever wedding we have to have” just makes this sound like this is yet another gala for your parents and their business connections. How sad.

Hire a party planner who works with other 1%ers and see if they can’t figure out how to make an 800 person convention into an elegant wedding with a shred of personality. I’m sure the right talent can make it happen for you.

sarajones :  If you were going to one of your friend’s weddings, what would you like to experience?  How can you bring in elegant, romantic, and classy if your wedding sounds like a carnival, business style?

Since it sounds like a lot of your guests will be people you don’t know/business invites, I would try and treat the reception almost more like a gala than a wedding. Like previous posters have said, focus on doing things that will be memorable for your guests, since their memories will come much more from their interactions with each other than with you.

Hiring a planner is definitely the first step! Sounds like you have that one under control.

I also second the idea of having a caricature artist, which is a nice step up from photo booth IMO, and my first thought–aerial performers! I’m not familiar with your venue, but if it has high ceilings, that would be amazing.

In the end, the same things that make a small wedding great will make your wedding great–good food, good drink, and great entertainment. The fact that you’re in a position that allows you not to have to make painful budget decisions makes that easier than for most of us! 🙂

I love the idea of a performing bartender (make sure they mix a good drink, though…that’s the most important part).

Depending on how much space you have, it would be really nice to set up a lounge type area around the bar that includes couches and other seating as well.

Finally, since you have the money, do some quality decorating! Depending on what kinds of things you love, you can do really elegent setups with chandeliers, and fully draped walls and statuesque flower arrangements, or you can transform the ballroom space into something else entirely with potted plants, trees and lights.

This is a concept that I LOVE, for example: http://apracticalwedding.com/2015/09/ljubljana-slovenian-wedding/ You could do this on a much bigger scale, and really tranform the event space.

Good luck with your planning! One piece of advice, that I mean kindly–remember to check yourself occasionally while you’re making decisions. It’s easy to spend money, but not everything expensive is worth while. Don’t spend just to spend, you know? Keep your priorities firmly in hand, and plan with those in mind! It’ll all come together. 🙂

btw, it’s unfortunately true that an event this size is going to lose personality and any sense of community. I would suggest also trying to plan a much smaller reception (maybe just at a reception) for you and your close friends and family to celebrate together. Just a thought.

Sorry to say but I sense a bit of bee envy in some of these comments. How does someone asking for wedding ideas turn into sponsoring refugess!? Really!? OP check pinterest etc but I think bees who have suggested not to over pack the night are correct!

I agree with a bee who said ditch the regular venue and do something out of the ordinary and exotic. Your decor also can take things to another level. Pinterest and wedding planner sites are your friend!

Good luck, and if you do take the ipad giveaway serious I’ll tak an invite too. What’s an extra body when you’re having 800!? hahahah
