Hello all! My wedding is coming up in a little under 6 months (eee!) and I’ve started talking to my bridesmaids about their “day-of” looks. I’m keeping it pretty laid back. They got the choose their own dresses based on the criteria of: must have straps, be full length, any shade of purple, and some kind of chiffon-y/drapy material. Their shoes are gold, any style. I want them all to wear their hair up, however they would like it, as long as it is up off of their shoulders and out of their faces. Pretty easy right? I like to think so anyways 🙂
Here is my big question – one of my bridesmaids is the lead singer in an alternative rock band, and currently has half of her head shaven and has her hair dyed a kind of neon blue. By the time of the wedding she plans on having her hair be black or dark brown again, but it will still be half shaven – which is fine! When I asked her to be a maid she offered to wear one of her wigs (that she uses for interviews/jobs that wouldn’t accept her hairstyle) and I told her that I asked HER to be my bridesmaid, and her look is apart of who she is – she’s one of my best friends and she doesn’t need to change.
I’m not going back on that statement at all – I just would like to know if any of you have suggestions for an elegant updo that would look nice with the half-shaven head. She is wearing a kind of grecian style gown with an empire waist and one off-shoulder strap – I was wondering if maybe some kind of wavey swept-up look would be nice? Any ideas out there? (or better yet – brides who have experience with this?) Thanks!! 🙂

what about curling it a bit like Rihanna has here?
I know the worry with ‘punk rock elegant’ hairstyles… i have dreads! not quite thought about how I’m going to do that for my own wedding… eep!

One of my friends got married last summer and her youngest sister had a similar hairstyle to what you are describing of your friend. Her hair looked awesome…I’ve attached a pic. You could barely even tell unless you looked at her up close that it was shaved on one side.
Alternatively could she do a sideswept ponytail with curls?
Side that is normal
Side that is shaved.

Kudos to you for not asking her to change who she is! I think that’s fantastic

I don’t have any suggestions, but I just wanted to tell you that you rock. The most hurtful thing someone at a bridal shop said to me before my wedding was “Oh, What are we going to do about your hair?” I have a super-short pixie that I love and it was really hurtful to hear that! Sorry for the saga, but I just had to say kudos to you!

i think pp have made some great suggestions. curls always soften up a funky hair style and make it more feminine.
it’s very thoughtful of you to truly accept who your friends are and wouldn’t expect them to change.

- Wedding: Either Philadelphia City Hall or a small chapel.
@GroovyHippieChick: Agreed. While it is your wedding, molding your bridesmaids into cookie-cutters isn’t right either.
But I like something in this realm:
