I don’t think it’s wrong to say elope just beacuse you’re engaged. Afterall, you’re still running away to get married! I think private ceremony sounds exclusive. I would go with the wording you like best.

My husband and I struggled with the same thing when we eloped. Finally we decided to annouce our elopement with a surprise video: http://www.vimeo.com/dorie/journey

Best wishes!

@darciebee:  I think ultimately people are going to be more intested in the message than the wording. And thank goodness for wedding message boards. They were my only source of advice when planning my elopement!

@darciebee:  You can say eloped – being engaged for a year doesn’t negate that! So use it if you want!

Private wedding will also do if you like that.  It can mean truly private or only a couple witnesses too I think.  Which do you like best?

I would say “Husband and Wife got married in an intimate ceremony on Date.”

My husband and I found something online and then played with it until it fit us.  After several days of working on it, we came up with

“Flowers and Limos and Cakes, Oh My

Dont need a white Dress, Dont need a black tie

No bells, No whistles, No thats not for us

So, We said ‘I do’ without all the fuss

BRIDE & GROOM exchanged their vows in a private ceremony on DATE”

Ours had the line “they said ‘I do’ in a wedding for two”.
