I have not been to kauai, but my friend has, she said it was beautiful. I thought I would chime in because I did go to Maui a few years ago in January, and it was gorgeous.  Maui is talked about like it is the more romantic of the islands.  It seemed like a lot of people were on their honeymoon, or just got married and we almost felt out of place!!!  Another great thing about maui in January is that the humpback whales have migrated there, and while they are all around the island of Hawaii, Maui has the most accessible views for them, as there is a large concentration of them between Maui and Molokai.  We would wakeup, look out our window and see them everyday, then went kayaking with them, it was amazing and so romantic!  Good luck planning!!!!

January is a very rainy month and Kauai is one of the rainiest islands.  I would second Maui because I’ve spend so much time there and it is nice to see the whales breaching and have views of Lanai and Molokai.

That said, it can be rainy in Maui too-just be sure to have a back-up plan because the weather can be really unpredictable that time of year.  But still, it is Hawaii and it’s still beautiful.  Good luck with your planning:)
