So I had a small red mark on my neck yesterday–thought it was a pimple. Gradually over the next few hours it got a round red ring around it and formed a hard puss filled top. I still thought it was just a bad pimple and went to bed.
Now it really hurts. I’m getting a little concerned. Could it just be a pimple? Or maybe a spider bite? Should I go to the Doctors about it. I just don’t want to go to the doctors to have them tell me I have a pimple on my neck….
Any suggestions? I am open to them…. kinda freaking out.
If you read this –thanks and sorry for the gross-factor!

You can try warm compresses to see if it will open and drain on its’ own
This article tells you when to see a doctor.

I would try putting a hot wash cloth on it to see if it will open the pore and let some of the puss out. If that doesn’t help or the puss continues, then I might call the doctor depending on my pain level.
I tend to pick at things like this, so I would likely try to pop it and see what happens.

It sounds like a cystic acne, especially if it’s hard and red and full of pus. I’m bad because I would do “surgery” on it. I couldn’t stand to leave the pus in there. Just make sure you sterilize your “instruments” before you try it:) Or you could go to the derm and they shoot it full of cortisone. Another option I’ve tried that works.

It just sounds like a bad zit. They can be really painful.
Just keep tabs on the redness around it — if it starts to spread, then see a doctor, because it could be infected at that point.
In the meantime, a hot compress is a good idea. I wouldn’t try popping anything that’s on your neck — you don’t want to run the (very very very slight) risk of rupturing the pus sac under the skin and having the pus drain toward your brain. Sorry, gross AND alarming.

It could be the start of an ingrown hair, or some type of acne, I agree the hot compress and then try to get the puss out

It could be Staph infection. Here are some photo’s –
Its really serious, if that’s what it is. You will need to make a doctor appt. ASAP! Just to make sure, I would make one. I had it back in 08 & it hurt REALLY bad. Started out small, looked like a pimple. Got big, VERY painful & hard. Then in started busting open & leaking green puse. :/ My husband (fiance at the time) & my mom made me go to the doctor. (I thought it was a boil.) By the time I went to the doctor I had had it for about a week or so. It turned into whole about the size of a nickle & it was deep. *Shivvvers thinking about it* I have type 1 diabetes & it made it that much worse & made it get bad, fast. Def NOT saying that is what you have because it could be a number of things, including just a bad pimple.
Just be aware of spreading, or leaking/anything NOT pimple like. Get some antibiotic cream & rub on it, just to be safe.

it could be a lot of things. I would go to the doctor to be safe. You don’t want to risk staph infection.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think i jumped to spider bite because i don’t get pimples. I don’t have any on my face and haven’t for quite some time. However, I did wear my hair down for the past two days and am wondering if the hair on my neck caused a pimple. IDK im just shooting in the dark now. I just want this monstrosity to go away. Why can’t it be winter so I can wear a turtleneck?
I’m going to try the warm compress now.

I had a boil on my neck that was really painful. I did the thing you aren’t suppose to do, I popped it like a zit. I took forever though since there was so much puss. I know you aren’t suppose to do that, but it felt so much better afterward.

omg. Go to the doctor. Red rings around any body mark can be a sign of something bad. It might just be a zit, but it sounds like you got bit by something.

Could it be a tick bite? Have you been spending time in the woods, near long grass, or with dogs/cats? I don’t know what part of the country that you live in, but don’t take a chance with Lyme disease!
All that said, it’s probably going to be totally fine. Good luck!

Could it be a ringworm? I googled it. You might want to look.
