I am not a large woman. I am 150 pounds and 5’5, I got a little jiggle but I get told a lot that I am small. I wear a size 8 in everything (shoe size, ring size, glove size included!).
So I ordered a wedding dress online that matched my measurements and of course it fits like a glove, my friend was looking at the tag and noted that it was a size 13/14 and started to laugh a little bit because she knows I wear a size 8.
I never once noted the actual dress size in my mind as when ordering all I was looking at were the measurements so I wasn’t prepared to be told “you wear a size 14”.
It certainly hit me a little bit and my face went so red from embarrassment of my friend seeing the size of the dress, I know wedding dresses are made small but it is still embarrassing…
So has anyone else felt embarrassed by the size of wedding dress that they had to purchase?

@ElayneRunner: That’s how they tend to run. I had to buy an 8 and I usually wear a 4.

Not really, lots of wedding dresses run MUCH smaller.
I wear an 18 in jeans and they had to order a 24 in my dress. Imagine my surprise! The dress size didn’t really bother me so much, but I just remembering thinking that the dress only went up to a 26.. and a woman slightly larger than me wouldn’t be able to order a dress.
I felt pretty sad about that.

Enh. Just think of it as foreign sizing. I don’t have monster feet because I wear a UK size 40 shoe.

I’m a plus size girl, I wear a 16-18 and when I ordered my dress I would normally fit into a 20 and ended up ordering a 22 so that way when alterations happen they can take it in and make sure certain skin gets hidden in the dress haha. Wedding dresses tend to have a bigger size than your street size. Don’t be embarassed! This is a normal thing!!

wedding dresses run small… besides.. .a dress that fits and looks great isnt about the size…
also.. the last time i checked size 14 isnt something to be embarrassed about… as it is the national average for woman in the US!
but thanx for implying that anyone who is above an 8 is fat!

I had expected larger but I was thinking a size 10 or something, I’m not as embarrassed now but if anyone asked the size of my dress I’d likely get all embarrassed about it.
I really thought that they would’ve at some point altered their dress size labels to be a more accurate match with street sizes!

or just dont be embarassed… people could care less what your dress size is… get over yourself!

@Makemeamrs: I wasn’t implying that anyone above a size 8 is fat, there are people who are a larger size than me who are actually slimmer than I am! I am just referring to my own personal body issues…
If I were a size 14 I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be wearing size 14 clothing, it is just that when you are accustomed to wearing this certain size and then you find out the dress you are wearing is several sizes above that it isn’t always the best feeling.
Really meant no disrespect to anyone who was any larger than I am!
Also, it is one thing to say not to be embarrassed about the smallest things in life but it doesn’t stop us from having that moment of embarrassment when something does happen. I don’t really think it is nice to be telling me to “get over myself” when I was just sharing an experience I had.

@ElayneRunner: I HATE the way wedding dresses run!! Why oh why must they make the bride feel fat!?

Haha- I’m a size 2/4 and wear a size 8! I think it’s surprising but not if you are usually buying a lot of couture/high fashion/european. I’m a size 8 at most european stores too!
I think the sizing in the US is just very different as I’ve had a lot of my overseas friends comment on how BIG things are here!

@ElayneRunner: if anything, the gown size is the accurate one. Gown sizes haven’t changed while street sizes keep reading smaller & smaller. It’s called vanity sizing, but the number on the label doesn’t matter.

I seriously don’t understand why on this earth wedding dresses insist on being sized so tiny. Everybody knows they run a lot smaller that store size, and yet they still make dresses so small. Getting a dress / planning a wedding is one of the most stressful thing in the world, and ladies, by nature are slef concious about their bodies, so why, oh why can’t someone rectify this matter??!!
Anyway, I don’t have any advice at all, just additional “guugghhhaaaahhhh!!!” to add to yours! 🙂

I wear an 8 and my Allure dress is a 16!!! when my dress came in and I went to the shop I tried my dress on and it fit very well, the girl working there said ” thank god it fits you. when I saw you I said that small girl is never going to fit into a 16 dress and this is going to be a disaster” she was new and didn’t realize how extremely tiny allure runs, she was in shock and kept checking the order that the dress was a 16 lol. As long as it looks good no one will see a tag on your wedding day! 🙂

I’m a 6 and they ordered me a size 12 wedding dress.
Nature of the beast of wedding dress shopping.
