We were engaged in January, and found information online about the beautiful garden atrium and windsor room at the Embassy Suites in Old Town, Alexandria for our ceremony/reception to be held in September 2012. We scheduled an appointment to view the spaces, and booked on the spot- signing on 02/12/2011. Exactly TEN MONTHS LATER on 12/12/11 (with about eight to go), the director of catering, contacts my fiance with some lame half-assed excuse that ‘sorry the room is no longer available due to construction on 09-02-2012.’ She sent a follow up email, instructing us not to contact her directly but to contact some other director of sales, and the email did not mention the construction.
At that point, I had a feeling that they booked a larger party in my room and were lying to profit and get us out, since it is the nicest space they offer to hold a reception. They offered to return the deposit (I guess I should be grateful?), or offered a “comparable space”… their ground-floor ballroom- a dingy conference room with removable walls and no windows…
Since I had a feeling that I was not being told the entire truth, I had my sister create an email account and request the dates surrounding my wedding with a larger wedding party. She was told that, unfortunately, the room would no longer be available as of APRIL 30th, as it was being converted into more guest rooms.
OKAY, excuse my french but w.t.f.? I have had this booked for ten months now. This kind of construction is more than a last minute decision. Why on earth was I not told sooner and even allowed to book this space if this was in the works?
I am not sure why I am writing this other than the fact that I am incredibly frustrated and stressed, and I think this hotel should make a hell of a lot more concessions other than, oops, here is your deposit back, or, take this dingy room at the same price!
If ANYONE had this happen to them (I assume there are many of us since they made the AWESOME business decision to start construction on a room at the beginning of wedding season) I hope you can pm me so we can go to corporate and raise hell.

Hm…perhaps they can work with other Hilton brands to get you a truly comparable place at another Hilton owned hotel in the area? That Embassy Suites is in a great location, but there’s a Hilton right nearby…across from the Metro station, at the top of Old Town.
Maybe they can make it right?
I stopped dealing with Hilton a while ago…as a business traveler who booked conference space fairly regularly, I was not pleased with their service. I like Kimpton (3 Kimptons in Old Town!), Starwood, and Marriott much better.

Request for deletion due to settlement agreement terms with venue. I am making a good faith effort to remove references 🙂
