    Be honest about your reasons for not go, and tell them as soon as possible. 🙂

    If you really don’t want to, I’m sure they’ll understand if you don’t.  I’d go, but I’m a workaholic and I can’t say no.  Also, I’d want to get away from my family drama, and I might even have fun or learn something at the conference.  Again, that’s probably just me… :S

    if its optional does that also mean you can miss out on some of the seminars/meetings??  meaning if you are checking into a hotel, a hot bath, room service and a massage would be wonderful if you can skip some of the work functions for some time out for yourself
