I know the ballgown v. mermaid thread has just been done, but I’m having a similar problem with mermaid v. empire dresses. I just tried a few of both on today, and I’m more confused than every! Please help! I’ve always wanted a mermaid gown – I really LOVE them and I have a good figure for them(I’m a little chubby, but I have a hourglass figure). I recently fell in love with empire style dresses that are really flowy and romantic, though. I’m having a beach wedding, so that might should be taken into consideration. I feel like an empire gown might be better in that regard, but I’m afraid I’ll end up regretting the decision not to go with my all time love – mermaid style. I definitely don’t want anything too long, but I do want a long gown. Here’s an example of two gowns I’m really liking right now:

Do you have pictures of you in the dresses? I tend to find empire waist dresses harder to pull off because it can sometimes make the wearer look pregnant. But, if done right, it looks very elegant and romantic. If you’re worried about the mermaid looking to formal for a beach wedding, you could try softer fabrics like chiffon.

I think dresses are completely dependent on body type so it is hard to say!

I sadly don’t have pictures of me in dresses. I just went today by myself. I don’t have anyone I care to take shopping with me besides my FH. My mom isn’t in my life, my grandmother’s comments would surely drag me down, and I don’t really feel comfortable with FH’s mom going. So maybe I can get him to go with me and take pictures next time. =)
I think I look good in both styles – I wear a size 12 but I have an hourglass figure. 36Dirty Delete, smaller waist, bigger hips. I don’t think the empire dresses make me look pregnant but I probably won’t to make sure that’s not just me thinking too highly of myself lol. I’ll post pictures when I get some. Thanks for being honest!

If you have your heart set on a mermaid dress and it looks good, that’s the one to pick! Personally, I am not a fan of empire waist dresses – i think sometimes they look like pajamas or like the bride is pregnant (nothing wrong with that, but if you’re not pregnant, why look like you are?)

You could look for a combination of the two. Technically mine would be considered a fit & flare with an empire waist: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-Fit-and-Flare-Gown-with-Bow-Detail-V3204_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Size-Petite
It’s fit and flare style, but the beading is in the empire waist spot.

I think both dresses will work well for a beach wedding. Honestly, it’s just up to you! They are both lovely.

Both are beautiful but they really depend on your body type. Go back and see if you can take pictures of yourself in both styles.

I gotta say, I’m not usually a fan of empire waists, but that one is gorgeous!!
