We are having a 2.5 year engagement for many of the reasons others are. We wanted to finish school and get settled before we tied the knot. Even though we had talked about getting engaged, our proposal was also pretty spontaneous— my fiance asked me to marry him after our apartment burned down and we lost almost everything we owned, which quickly made us realize how much we meant to one another– so we wanted to give ourselves a lot of time to set a date and enjoy being engaged. We’re finally less than a year away and it’s finally getting exciting!

We got engaged in August 2007 and we’re getting married in June 2009, so we’ll be just under the two year mark. We had good reasons for waiting (grad school, moves, dissertations, etc), but honestly, the engagement has been way too long. I’m just so ready for the wedding to be over and for us to be married, already.

Maybe its something about lawyers wanted to wait? I didn’t get engaged in law school but we started dating the first year of law school. We are now both lawyers. He proposed a year after we graduated (August 2008) and we are getting married in September 2010.  I wanted a summer wedding and I also wanted time to enjoy the engagement so we decided that it would be best to wait two years.  This gives us time to plan the engagement party too.

By the time we get married, we will have been engaged one day less than two years. We wanted to wait til I was done with school (I graduate in 14 days) and save money to buy a home. I am glad we had a long engagement because there has not been  too much stress, but I am dying to marry myMr!!! I wish it could have been a little shorter.

i was wondering,.. for all us bees that have long engagements, what is your timeline for planning? have you started dress shopping for instance, or are you waiting awhile before making any "real" decisions. As of right now, i’m putting together a wedding scrapbook of all images of anything wedding that i love or find inspiration from…at the end of summer i am going to look at reception venues and go from there.

We were engaged for two years and I loved being able to take our time. We’d been together for 6 years when we were engaged, and knew we’d be together forever, so we didn’t mind waiting a little longer. Part of the reason we decided on a 2-year engagement was a family wedding planned for the following summer.

we were engaged for 20 months. my husband has 3 brothers all in school, both of my parents work for universities, and we wanted to get married in china. so the only time they were all going to be free for a 2 weeks at the same time was during their summer months off. since we got engaged in dec. i didn’t think we had enough time to plan if we got married within the first 6 months. so we waited till the following summer.

and yes, we’re so glad we waited. the timing was perfect for us. 2008 summer olympics was in china. we got married on 8.8.08 in china on the same day and time as the opening ceremony. so many of our friends came because they also wanted to see the olympics. we got married in a small town in southern china, travelled for 2 weeks through china and finally ended up in beijing to watch the olympics. it was an amazing experience.

i felt more relaxed that i had so much more time to plan. i don’t think your ideas now will go out of style in 2 years. if it’s the style you love, you’ll still love it in 2 years.

Yea, I found my peeps! I am a fellow law-schooler (my Fiance is the student, I just get to live in res with him!). We were engaged in August 2008 right before he started school, and our tentative date is May 2011. Good point about the studying for/taking the bar though… we will have to discuss it. It might make more sense to wait until later in the summer…maybe? Anyways, I’m so glad to find so many 2010/2011 brides! It’s so sad when we don’t even make it onto the "month twins" board yet!

We got engaged in October 2008 and we’re waiting until September 2010 for the same reason as you and your fiance… except I’m the one in law school.  It would have just been too stressful to try to deal with finals, and then straight into studying, and the bar exam with a wedding thrown into the mix.  At least I will have August and most of September to wrap up any plans necessary.  I need the long engagement just to be able to have time enough to get things done. I think it will be well worth the wait though… I would hate to be stressed about so many other things when I should be enjoying the day.

@krissybee The timeline is something that I’m stuggling with, I feel like I need to be doing stuff but I’m not quite sure what I can be doing. I’m kind of doing what you are, collecting images of things that I really like. I’ve tried on dresses although I’ve made no decisions and looked at invitation ideas. I really want to pick a venue soon; I think that’s my mental roadblock right now, I feel like I need to pick that in order to pick anything else.

Ack! Is anyone else struggling with the timeline? Are have any advice for long engagement timelines?

@Brightasthesun yep, i feel the exact same about picking the venue..its going to effect alot of other things…its tough because i don’t want to make decisions too early because i’m afraid i could change my mind 6 months from now, and yet i still want to take advantage of the time i have to get everything in order.

@Catherine i know i’m bummed theres not a 2011 "month twins" board!! owell, we’ll be ready when there is! 🙂
