- Wedding: September 2015 - Edinburgh
I’ve been lurking around here for a food long while but promised myself I wouldn’t join until I was actually engaged. Well, it happened on Sunday and I’m absolutely over the moon!
Last Tuesday was the first day I had any inkling that anything was going to happen. I called my mum and dad after work for a chat and my dad answered. Usually we talk briefly about our days or the weather and then he passes me over to my mum. He sounded really happy on the phone and said that he’d had a lovely conversation with my boyfriend. I was pretty confused because this is jot something that usually happens. My dad is not a chatter And my boyfriend is not the type to call someone for no reason. My dad tried to play it off like he had misspoken and was feeling a bit off that day, but I was suspicious! I tried my best not to tell anyone about it – just kidding, I called my sister straight away. She was infuriatingly noncommittal and made out like I was crazy. I tried to put it out of my head (but still managed to tell another 3 people in 4 days – oops!). I’m not very good at keeping secrets.
That weekend I went to a neighbouring city for a hen (bachelorette) party for my best friend. It had been quite stressful to organise and I had been anxious about it for a few weeks beforehand, wanting to make sure the bride had the best time possible. On the Sunday my boyfriend and I had planned to go out for chateaubriand for our 4 year anniversary and he also let slip that he’d booked us into a boutique hotel for the night. I was getting excited, pretty sure that that would be the night, but I thought if the worst that happens is I get to eat a giant steak and stay at a nice hotel I’ll be ok with that too! Anyway, the hen party went amazingly well and the bride seemed so happy with what we’d organised. Also, I was only a little bit hungover, so that was a bonus.
When I got back we packed our bags really quickly. My boyfriend seemed his normal self, not nervous or anything so I started to doubt it would happen, but decided just to enjoy my evening. The hotel was gorgeous and the food was amazing. Then we went for a walk around the canal. It’s a pretty special area for us because it’s where we got our first flat together and it’s where we live now. We walked down to an old swing bridge and he got down on one knee and proposed. He had the ring already (I’d been pretty clear on what I wanted and he actually wrote it down after a previous birthday present request debacle), and it was absolutely perfect. He didn’t make a big speech, which I was very thankful for as it’s definiely not our style, but just said that he loved me and wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I said yes (obvs) and then we continued on our walk to our favourite pub and had I had a pint of my favourite beer to round off an amazing weekend. To make the whole thing better I’m a teacher and this week is our half term week, so I don’t have to go back until next Monday. Hooray!
Apologies for the novel-length recap, but as I said, I’m on holiday this week and nobody else is, so I haven’t been able to bore people in real life with my story!
