So this is a little belated, but I just wanted to share our engagement story! Please pardon me if it’s a little long, but I love sharing it!
The Back Story: In our relationship, I moved about an hour away to college for 4 1/2 years, and was away in different states every summer for jobs. So we had our share of long distance. Now I have moved back home and got a job in New Orleans, I bought a house and SO has gone through losing a long-time job, having a really crappy job, and now working for a non-profit that has been really great to him. I mention the job for a reason..
Also, we are both from big Disney-loving families. We each have more family vacations there than we can count, and we’ve been together several times.
We were set to go to Disney World with his parents to the Food and Wine Festival in October 2012. But he had aforementioned crummy job, which credited his vacation days as evacuation days for Hurricane Isaac in September. So now he had no vacation days with which to take our vacation. This kicked it in gear to find him a new job, which he did find while his family was in WDW. Kind of like fate, really. His getting a new job was like a turning point in our relationship, because it made so many things better..He has said that his original plan was to do it in October, but it’s funny how things just work out better than we plan sometimes..
And new job said it would be OK for him to reschedule his trip to December. He suggested we go early in December so we would be there for our anniversary and his birthday. Now we had been ring shopping together, I was pretty sure he had the ring, so it was all I could do to just keep my mind racing! I think I started following the “shut it up” pacts on here after that..
The PROPOSAL STORY:
We wanted to go to a nice dinner on December 9th, our first night in WDW, and our 7 year anniversary. Before the trip, I came across a reservation at California Grill, and he agreed that he’d like to eat there again. Now, if you aren’t familiar, California Grill is a nice restaurant on the top of the Contemporary Hotel, which is right next to the Magic Kingdom. When the fireworks go off at MK, they pipe the music into the speakers on the balcony at the restaurant, and everyone goes outside for a fantastic view of the fireworks.
So of course I was a little anxious..anniversary, fireworks, he encouraged me to buy a new dress so that we could dress up for the dinner..But he was SO COOL all day. Like..not a bit of worry when we were doing theme park stuff, just acting natural as can be. I started to doubt and tell myself not to get my hopes up..we had all week there, and there was Christmas coming, and my birthday after that..it could happen any of those times right?
We go to dinner and order, then go outside to watch the special holiday fireworks, which were great, but it got crowded on the balcony. Some random guy started chatting us up after the fireworks, talking about the different fireworks at New Years and Fourth of July..SO was like “GO AWAY!”, even though of course the guy didn’t know what he was interupting! When the other guy left, SO lingered a bit, I guess mustering up his courage. I started to walk back inside to see if our appetizers had arrived, but he took my hand and said “wait wait, I have something to ask you” which totally melted my heart. He dropped down to one knee, and said all kinds of sweet things! I got all choked up and when he finally asked the question, all I could say was “REALLY?” (which he still doesn’t let me live down). and then I said yes yes yes and we headed back inside the restaurant, and the few people who were left on the balcony were congratulating us.
It was a great week that we had just to ourselves, wearing our “just engaged” buttons around and getting congratulated, and not having to worry about actually planning anything, just talking about some ideas with each other. The proposal was perfect and the week was perfect. In talking about it after, apparently he got worried that there were too many people on the balcony, but he went through with it anyway, after most of them cleared out, that’s why he was stalling. I love that, because he’s not very comfortable doing things in public, so he broke out of his comfort zone for me!
And here’s what I spent doing the night of our engagement..taking too many pictures of my new shiny ring! It’s the stone from his great-aunt’s ring, set in a setting that was one of my top two at the jewelry store. And I love it like mad. I spend so much time just staring at how sparkley the whole thing is! Here are pictures for reading my long novel!
I’ve been a lurker on the bee for a few months, starting out when I was researching ring stuff, but getting addicted to everything else too 🙂 Now I’m happy to be here for actual wedding planing! Even though it was kind of a rough start with all the planning (that’s another story!) we’ve got a date and place set and I’m now excited again about the engagement and the amazing things that have happend! Thanks for reading, I’m so happy to BEE here!
