Hi all! My boyfriend (now fiance yay!) proposed on our vacation to Ireland last week!!
I was really hoping he would, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much in case he didn’t. We have been SO busy lately, and we were super busy with things right up until we left for our vacation Friday 9/28, so I wasn’t sure if my SO would be too overwhelmed with everything going on to actually propose on our trip.
The day we left for the trip, I had convinced myself that he wasn’t going to propose. The plan had been to propose with a stand in ring, and that ring was sitting on his filing cabinet in his office when we left. It was pushed slightly out of view, so for a minute I thought he had taken it and I was so excited, but then nosey me just had to be sure, and I looked closer and saw it. But while I was disappointed, I figured oh well, at least now I know.
But of course he did propose!! He proposed our first night in Ireland. He wanted to go to a nice dinner that first night, but I insisted that I wouldn’t have time to get dressed up nice with my makeup and all. His insistance didn’t clue me in because I had already said I wanted to do at least one really nice dinner in Ireland, and he said he wanted to do it that first night because due to our plans our next opportunity for the nice dinner would be closer to the end of the trip, and he didn’t want to spend a lot on a fancy dinner after spending so much money the entire trip. I told him his logic was silly because we’d be spending the same amount of money either way, and he couldn’t really say anything to that, so we ended up not going to a fancy dinner that first night.
Of course I found out afterwards his real reason was that he wanted to propose that first night. He told me he didn’t want to wait to propose because he didn’t want me to be left wondering the entire trip if he was going to propose. He didn’t realize I had already convinced myself he wasn’t going to propose, because he thought pushing the ring box back and slightly under something was a good enough hiding job lol (he didn’t want me to be disappointed thinking he wasn’t going to propose, which is why he tried to “hide” the box lol). The reason he didn’t actually take the stand in ring was because he bought an actual engagement ring!
So a week before the trip, he decided it would be more special to propose with the actual engagement ring. He found out when he went to our local jeweler on the Monday before our trip that trying to get a purple sapphire ring in less than a week was REALLY cutting it short lol. The jeweler ordered the stone on Monday (luckily our jewler specializes in gemstones so had someone to source one from quickly), my SO picked it up on Wednesday and also picked out the setting that day, and my jeweler was able to rush the ring to get it done by Friday, the morning of our trip. My SO told me that week that he was dealing with tenants during those times he was away, so I didn’t suspect anything.
(Side note to those who saw my previous post: I wasn’t clear enough with my SO that I had actually put a deposit down on the gemstone I was getting custom cut, so he figured it was fine to just get a gemstone from our local jeweler since the custom one wouldn’t be done in time for our trip. He did say that he is totally fine if I want to switch out the center stone (or the setting), but honestly, the instant he opened that ring box I fell in love with the engagement ring he picked out, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it for the world. I’m out the deposit for the other stone, but it’s a beautiful stone, and I have no doubt someone else will very happily snatch it up quickly!)
Anyway, so we ended up going to a nice pub for dinner that first night. We sat at this cute outside area, facing these pretty flowers. My SO kept going for a bit of his food, then putting his spoon down without eating it, over and over again, which confused me because he had said he liked it. But I figured he was just lost in thought (I had so thoroughly convinced myself he wasn’t proposing, that the thought he might be nervous and about to propose didn’t cross my mind). Then our server came up to our table, and my SO handed him his phone, asking him to take a video. I thought he was just asking him to take a photo, so I still had no idea. Then my SO started taking the ring box out of his pocket, and at first I thought it was the digital camera, but obviously it was the ring box. I was SO SO shocked, I couldn’t do anything but go, “Are you serious???” a couple of times. Then finally I’m like, “You have to put the ring on me.” Because he was just kneeling there lol.
I’m actually happy it ended up being in that pub instead of a fancy restaurant. It’s so much more us, we’re really not the fancy restaurant type usually. It was a really comfortable atmosphere, everyone around us was cheering and a few people came up to us and congratulated us. The server brought us a bottle of champagne on the house, and someone at the next table said to his wife, “Hey, maybe I should propose to you again!” And the server was like, “This is a special ONE TIME! Only one couple a month! One!” Joking around. It was pretty funny, and we were just so happy and having such a good time!
I’m so in love with my ring, even though it isn’t what I thought I would get. I told my SO (now FI!!!) that the one thing that was important to me was that I had a purple sapphire oval as my center stone. The jeweler showed him a bunch of settings, including simpler ones that were more along the lines of what I was thinking of getting, but then he saw this one with the center stone, and he says something just “clicked” and he knew it was the one. I thought that was so sweet. He also said if I didn’t like the setting or the stone we could exchange them with no issue, but as I said earlier, I just fell in love with the ring and would genuinely not change a thing. I love the style of the setting, and love the look of the two tones. I also love the stone, the color changes from pinky-purple to a deeper purple depending on the lighting, and it sparkles like crazy.
Anyway, sorry for rambling for so long, I tend to do that lol. Here is the ring! It’s hard to capture the beauty in photos, but I tried lol.
TL/DR: I’m engaged!!!! My SO (now FI!!!) proposed the first night of our vacation to Ireland. I was shocked and I’m so happy!!
